More About The Railroad
The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic is a historical and engineering marvel nestled in the rugged landscapes of Colorado and New Mexico. This narrow-gauge heritage railroad runs from Antonito, Colorado, to Chama, New Mexico, spanning 64 miles of breathtaking terrain.
Renowned for its authentic steam locomotives and meticulously preserved rolling stock, the railroad offers a journey back in time, embracing both enthusiasts of rail travel and those seeking an exquisite scenic adventure.
Established in 1880 as part of the Denver & Rio Grande's (later Denver & Rio Grande Western) San Juan Extension, the route was initially developed to serve the burgeoning mining industries of the region. Over time, the demand for narrow-gauge lines dwindled alongside these industries, leading to the decline of many such railroads.
Ultimately, the states of Colorado and New Mexico saved components of the D&RGW for posterity and this section was renamed as the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic.
The journey between Antonito and Chama is an unparalleled experience. Passengers embark on a trip that ascends through the San Juan Mountains, reaching the impressive altitude of 10,015 feet at Cumbres Pass.
This is the highest mountain pass reached by rail in the United States and offers stunning vistas of expansive valleys, rugged peaks, and forested slopes. The route also crosses the Continental Divide, providing a unique look at the geography of the American Southwest.
A key feature of the C&TS experience is its dedication to authenticity. The railroad continues to operate century-old, 2-8-2 coal-fired steam locomotives, most of which are original to the line from the Rio Grande era.
These engines exemplify the artistry and engineering of a bygone era, reflecting the robust industrial heritage that characterized the expansion of the American West.
Apart from the locomotives, the railroad's original structures, including depots, water towers, and maintenance facilities, have been carefully maintained or restored, allowing visitors to immerse themselves fully in the historical context.
The ride itself is characterized by a plethora of highlights, including the high trestle bridge at Cascade Creek, the picturesque Los Pinos Valley, and the dramatic Toltec Gorge. Throughout the journey, passengers can enjoy open-air gondola cars, perfect for capturing the sweeping scenery.
For those interested in a deeper historical or technical understanding, the train staff, including knowledgeable docents, offer insights into the railroad’s extensive history and the details of steam operation.
In addition to its scenic and historical offerings, the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad plays a significant role in local tourism. It draws visitors from around the world, contributing to the economies of Antonito and Chama and helping to preserve the cultural heritage of the area. Seasonal events, including special holiday-themed rides, expand its appeal, fostering community engagement and expanding the railroad’s reach to families and enthusiasts alike.
The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad stands as a tribute to the ingenuity and determination of those who built it, and it continues to capture the imagination of those who ride it. Its combination of history, natural beauty, and operational authenticity makes it a remarkable journey through both time and terrain, offering a unique and memorable experience in the heart of the American West.
New Mexico’s Christmas-themed train rides promise an adventure through its enchanting landscapes, imbued with the festive spirit of the season. Whether it's a historical journey, a family-fun day with Santa, or an immersive storybook ride, these experiences are sure to create lasting memories. Embrace the opportunity to explore New Mexico in this unique way, wrapped in the warmth of holiday magic.
