Maine Father's Day Train Rides
Published: April 30, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Father's Day is a special occasion to celebrate and appreciate the father figures who have profoundly impacted our lives. This year, why not trade the conventional gifts and barbeque in for something exceptional—a scenic train ride across the beautiful state of Maine.
With its rich history in agriculture and timber, lush landscapes, and charming towns, Maine offers a nostalgic and memorable way to make Father's Day truly unforgettable. There are currently two locations hosting an official event celebrating dad, the Seashore Trolley Museum and Downeast Scenic Railroad.
Downeast Scenic Railroad S4 #1055, originally built for the Portland Terminal with the same number in November, 1950.
Downeast Scenic Railroad
For those seeking a journey deep into the heart of Maine’s wilderness, the Downeast Scenic Railroad is a perfect choice. Located in Ellsworth, this vintage train ride navigates historic tracks that once connected towns in Hancock County. Celebrate Father’s Day with a 90-minute round trip through lush forests, tranquil rivers, and peaceful marshlands. The railroad states that dads can enjoy this trip free of charge!
Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way, as the area is rich in deer, eagles, and other native species. The railroad is not only a testament to historical preservation but also a delightful means to explore Maine’s natural beauty with your loved ones.
Seashore Trolley Museum
The Seashore Trolley Museum, located in Kennebunkport, Maine, is recognized as the world's first and largest museum dedicated to interurban and streetcar history. Established in 1939 by a group of rail enthusiasts who wanted to preserve a single streetcar from the Biddeford & Saco Railroad, the museum has grown exponentially over the decades.
The museum's collection includes an impressive array of trolley cars, buses, and other transit vehicles, amassed from various cities across the United States and around the globe. This diverse collection serves as a testament to the evolution of public transportation and its critical role in urban development. Visitors can explore and learn about vehicles from different eras, including some that date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, offering a vivid look into the past.
Many vehicles in its collection have been meticulously restored to near-original condition, providing an authentic glimpse into the history of one of the world’s most vital public services. Restoration efforts are often undertaken by knowledgeable volunteers, which includes everything from structural repairs to precise details of the vehicles' exteriors and interiors.
A key attraction is the opportunity to experience a ride on a heritage streetcar along the museum’s private 1.5-mile demonstration railway. This unique feature allows visitors not only to see historical trolley cars up close but also to experience them in action, hearing the distinct sounds and feeling the ride that commuters from decades past would have known. For Father's Day the organization states that dads can ride the trolley cars free of charge!
The Seashore Trolley Museum operates as a non-profit organization, reliant on the generous support of volunteers, members, and donors. Their commitment not only preserves important pieces of transportation heritage but also provides a dynamic educational experience for future generations. Open seasonally from May to October, the museum invites everyone to explore a unique and vital part of transportation history, celebrating the enduring legacy of the trolley.

- Timing: Check the specific departure times and any special events planned for Father’s Day as they often vary based on the railway’s schedule.
Final Thoughts

Whether your dad is a history buff, a nature lover, or simply enjoys a unique experience, these rail excursions provide a perfect platform to honor and spend quality time together.
