Pennsylvania offers one of the densest clusters of tourist railroads and museums in the United States: Amish Country steam at Strasburg, gorge diesel at Jim Thorpe, narrow-gauge industrial revival at East Broad Top, river rides from Honesdale, oil-region excursions at Titusville, and trolley museums that keep interurban history alive. Whether you want a 45-minute family steam hop or a multi-hour foliage day, the Keystone State usually has a ticket that fits.

State Rail History
Pennsylvania’s rail story begins before the main-line era. In 1827 the Mauch Chunk Switchback Gravity Railroad moved coal near present-day Jim Thorpe; after freight ended, it operated as an early tourist attraction into the Depression. The commonwealth’s modern railroad age is inseparable from the Pennsylvania Railroad, chartered in 1846 after canal experiments proved an all-rail Main Line was the future. At its height the PRR ran more than 10,000 route miles across 11 states and styled itself “The Standard Railroad of the World.”
Other giants shared the state: Baltimore & Ohio, New York Central, Reading, Lehigh Valley, CNJ, Erie, Lackawanna, and more. Pennsylvania also built the industry—Baldwin at Eddystone, GE at Erie, J. G. Brill streetcars in Philadelphia—and left engineering landmarks: Horseshoe Curve, Tunkhannock and Starrucca viaducts, Rockville Bridge, and the remains of Kinzua.
Mileage peaked near 11,551 in 1920 (Stover). More than half has since been abandoned; roughly 5,100 miles remain in freight service. Tourist railroads and museums now interpret what the map lost and what still moves coal, intermodal, and passengers through the Keystone State.

Strasburg Rail Road
America’s oldest continuously operating railroad company (chartered 1832) is also Pennsylvania’s attendance leader: steam power, restored wooden cars, Amish Country scenery, dining options, and a roughly 45-minute / 9-mile round trip from East Strasburg. Peak October weekends sell early. Pair with the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania next door.

Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway
Reading & Northern’s flagship short scenic product from the restored Lehigh Valley station at Jim Thorpe follows the Lehigh River on former LV/CNJ trackage—about a 16-mile round trip (shorter options appear on some calendars). Autumn Leaf trains are among the East’s best-known foliage products. Book and confirm length for your date on the R&N passenger site.

Reading & Northern Iron Horse Rambles & Long Steam Days
Separate from the Jim Thorpe gorge day train, R&N’s passenger department markets Iron Horse Rambles and other longer steam (or diesel) excursions—often behind legendary T-1 4-8-4 #2102 when rostered—on routes such as Reading Outer Station to Jim Thorpe (with Port Clinton stops) and other origins published each year (Pottsville foliage origins, Nesquehoning-area rambles, and specials have appeared on recent calendars). These are full-day mainline-style trips, not the ~70-minute gorge loop: different tickets, different boarding cities, and much earlier sellouts. Always use the current R&N passenger calendar rather than assuming every Jim Thorpe date is a Ramble.

East Broad Top Railroad
The legendary three-foot-gauge coal road at Rockhill Furnace / Orbisonia is again a living industrial-history railroad under the East Broad Top Foundation revival. Public trains (Colgate Grove, Pogue, combos, specials) run deep into color season; steam when rostered. National Historic Landmark shops and yard reward early arrival.

New Hope Railroad
Bucks County’s steam-and-diesel tourist short line connects New Hope with Ivyland-area freight interchange. Vintage cars and seasonal foliage/special products make it a Philadelphia-day-trip staple.

Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad
In the Oil Creek Valley, this diesel-powered tourist line offers longer (~3 hour class) excursions through the birthplace-of-oil landscape, plus murder-mystery and seasonal specials. Fall foliage Wed–Sun blocks are a Pennsylvania planning staple.
Colebrookdale Railroad (Secret Valley Line)
Boyertown–Pottstown Reading heritage with coach and premium cars; Autumn Splendor Sundays anchor the foliage calendar.

From Honesdale—linked in lore to the Stourbridge Lion—excursions follow the Lackawaxen River corridor with scenic, lunch, dinner, and beer-tasting products. Northern Pocono foliage demand is strong each October.

About 36 miles from center-city Philadelphia on former PRR electrified corridor (catenary poles still visible). Multi-stop heritage rides and Fall Foliage Express-style products serve the western suburbs.
Everett Railroad
Hollidaysburg-area freight short line with public steam (when M&NJ 2-6-0 #11 or other power is rostered) and seasonal calendar March–October plus holidays.
Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad
Namesake-city freight line with passenger trains on about 11 miles, often behind CN 2-6-0 #91, May–October plus specials.
Allentown & Auburn Railroad
About four miles of former Reading branch (Kutztown–Topton NS interchange) with caboose/coach/open-car public trips behind a historic SW switcher.
Bellefonte Historical Railroad
Centre County history interpreted from the restored 1889 brick depot, with select public excursions on local trackage—confirm the current calendar before planning a trip.
Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train
At Ashland in the anthracite region, Pioneer Tunnel pairs a classic underground coal-mine tour (mine cars into Mahanoy Mountain) with a separate narrow-gauge steam train sightseeing ride along the mountainside—a high-demand family product April through October when both attractions are open. It is industrial-heritage tourism as much as pure rail scenery, and it fills a northeastern Pennsylvania gap between Lehigh Gorge / Jim Thorpe and longer R&N steam days. Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village
At Muddy Creek Forks (Airville area, York County), the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society interprets a steam-era rural railroad community—general store, mill, and grounds—with public motorcar train rides on remaining Ma & Pa main-line trackage through the Muddy Creek Valley. Typical pattern is Sunday operations in summer (plus special-event days); the ride is shorter and more heritage-village than a coach scenic railroad, but it is a genuine operating piece of Ma & Pa right-of-way. Pair with Northern Central of York for a York County rail day when calendars align.
