A Brief History

Early Beginnings

The Stourbridge Line’s history dates back to the early 19th century and is rooted in the rich industrial heritage of the region.

The original Honesdale to Lackawaxen line was part of the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company's gravity railroad, constructed to transport coal from the mines of Pennsylvania to markets in New York.

The line formally opened in 1829, marking a significant development in American railroading history. This line is notably tied to the Stourbridge Lion, one of America's first locomotives, which ran in 1829 and became an iconic part of rail history.

Evolution and Decline

The track in front of the railroad's Visitor’s Center, where trains are boarded, is part of the original D&H Honesdale Branch. It served as the Canal Basin for the D&H Canal Company, a vital hub where boats were loaded with coal for their 108-mile journey to Kingston, New York.

Over the 20th century, this track experienced several transitions. Initially owned by the Erie Railroad, it later became part of the Erie Lackawanna following their merger in the 1960s.

Subsequent ownership included LASB, Stourbridge Railroad, and M&E. Today, it proudly operates under the Delaware, Lackawaxen, and Stourbridge Railroad.

Embark on an enchanting holiday journey aboard the Santa Christmas Tree Express. Enjoy the warmth and comfort of our heated coaches as you travel to the track-side Christmas Tree Farm.

Upon arrival, disembark and delight in a festive visit with Santa Claus. Take your time to select the perfect Christmas tree and savor complimentary hot chocolate.

Passengers will have approximately one hour to meet Santa and pick out their ideal Christmas tree (please note, the cost of trees is not included in the ticket price). Watch as your chosen tree is baled, tagged, and loaded onto the flat car.

Upon returning to the station, our crew will unload the trees so you can conveniently take yours to your vehicle. Please remember to bring the necessary supplies to secure the tree to your car.

Christmas trees are individually priced and sold by Dein Nurseries. Join us for a memorable Christmas experience that blends the magic of the season with the joy of tradition.

**Easter Egg Express:**

- Celebrate Easter with a special train ride that includes an Easter egg hunt, visits from the Easter Bunny, and family-friendly activities.

**Autumn Leaf Excursions/Pocono Foliage Express:**
