NS Names a Student Hub at the University of Georgia

Published: November 6, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Norfolk Southern said on November 3 that the University of Georgia College of Engineering has named a student-organization hub for the railroad inside Driftmier Engineering Center. The college marked the naming on Monday, October 26. The gift is 100,000 dollars. The page says the room gives engineering student club leaders a place to meet, work together, and practice skills for later careers.

What the space is for

The page says the gift supports the 23 student clubs and organizations in the College of Engineering, with a workspace where officers and members can coordinate projects, hold meetings, and work across engineering fields. It names four of those groups and says the space supports 23 organizations, including the National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers, and the Society of Women Engineers. Those four are examples. The page does not say they are the whole list.

Kristin Wong, director, Norfolk Southern Foundation & Community Impact, said: “Investing in the Student Organization Hub is an investment in workforce development. By giving engineering students a place to collaborate, share ideas, and grow as leaders, we’re helping them build the skills they’ll need to succeed in their careers and shape the future of engineering.”

Alex Orso, dean of the UGA College of Engineering, said Norfolk Southern has been a fantastic partner to the university and the college, and that the dedicated space is a great representation of that support for the engineering leaders of tomorrow. The page prints those two sentences as his quotation.

What the page does not add

The account does not give a room number, a construction cost beyond the 100,000 dollar gift, or a count of students who will use the hub. It says engineers matter to safer railroads, and that the gift supports hands-on learning, leadership, and collaboration at the university. It does not describe a hiring commitment.

Two other Norfolk Southern notes from the same week are separate. One is the Birmingham housing grant. The other is the veterans workforce count. Neither is part of this naming.
