The Early Days: Interurban Origins

The roots of the Boone and Scenic Valley trace back to the early 20th century when it was part of the Fort Dodge, Des Moines and Southern Railroad (FDDM&S).

The earliest beginnings of the FDDM&S started with the Crooked Creek Railroad, a three-foot narrow-gauge line chartered in 1875.

The interurban was established in 1905, played a significant role in connecting communities in central Iowa. The system would eventually grow to about 147 miles, facilitated the transportation of passengers, agricultural products, coal, and other goods essential to the local economy.

Decline and Preservation

By the mid-20th century, the rise of automobiles and highways led to a decline in interurban rail travel. Faced with dwindling patronage and competition from trucks, many segments of the FDDM&S were abandoned. Yet, a stretch of the line through the scenic Des Moines River Valley held significant historical and aesthetic value.

In 1983, the Boone Railroad Historical Society was formed, dedicated to preserving and celebrating the remaining portion of the railway. Renamed the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad, it became a living museum, showcasing the region’s railroading heritage and natural beauty.

Exploring The Railroad

Today, the BSV Railroad offers a variety of experiences that bring history to life and highlight the splendor of Iowa’s landscapes. Here’s what you can expect during your visit:

The Train Ride

The heart of the B&SV experience is undoubtedly its scenic train rides. Departing from Boone, these journeys offer breathtaking views of the Des Moines River Valley, crossing historic bridges and traversing lush woodlands.

Scenic Excursions

The standard scenic excursions are popular among visitors of all ages. These round-trip rides typically last around an hour and forty-five minutes, taking passengers through stunning vistas and across the impressive Bass Point Creek High Bridge, towering 156 feet above the creek.

The rhythmic clatter of the rails, the gentle sway of the train, and the scenic views create a nostalgic and memorable journey.

Dinner Trains

For a blend of fine dining and scenic travel, the BSV Railroad’s dinner trains offer an exceptional experience. Passengers can enjoy a gourmet meal prepared on board the train while taking in the beautiful surroundings. This unique offering is perfect for special occasions or a romantic evening out.

Special Event Trains

Throughout the year, the B&SV hosts a variety of special event trains, each providing a themed experience that caters to both families and rail enthusiasts:

- **The Santa Express:** During the holiday season, the Santa Express brings festive cheer with a visit from Santa Claus, hot cocoa, and a magical trip through the winter landscape.

- **Pumpkin Express:** In the fall, the Pumpkin Express takes families to a pumpkin patch where children can pick their own pumpkins and enjoy seasonal activities.

Historic Equipment and Exhibits

Alongside the train rides, the BSV Railroad offers an impressive collection of historic locomotives, railcars, and railroad artifacts, each with its own story to tell.

Locomotives

Crab Orchard & Egyptian 2-8-0 #17 - One of the B&SV's notable steam locomotives was former CO&E #17, which holds the historic distinction of being the last operating common carrier steam locomotive in North America (1986).

Purchased on February 9, 1987, the locomotive initially spent several years on display, adorned with the CO&E's pyramid logo. However, exposure to the elements has taken its toll, leaving it in poor condition.

Today, No. 17, along with a non-operable passenger car, has been strategically relocated to a prominent spot visible from Highway 30 in Boone. This static display, now repainted black, serves as a welcoming landmark for visitors to Boone.

China Railways 2-8-2 #8419 - In the late 1980s, the railroad also acquired one of the last new 2-8-2 Mikado steam locomotives built in China, the China Railways JS No. 8419, at a cost of $335,000.

This JS locomotive operates the museum's 1920s-themed excursion trains every Saturday from Memorial Day Weekend to October 31, enchanting visitors with its vintage charm.

Canadian National FP9A #6540 - In 2002, the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad expanded its fleet by acquiring and restoring a FP9, originally Canadian National locomotive.

Repainted in colors inspired by the Chicago and North Western Railway, this locomotive now powers the BSVR dinner train, offering guests a unique and picturesque dining experience.

In addition to train rides, the railroad offers a short trolley ride and has recently begun light freight switching services at Boone industries. Conveniently, the station is located just one block from the Union Pacific Railroad mainline.

Chicago & North Westenr F7A #401 - On March 10, 2023, the railroad welcomed ex-Chicago and North Western 401, an EMD F7 locomotive, generously donated by Union Pacific.

There are plans to restore this historic locomotive to operating condition, further enriching the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad's impressive collection.

Rolling Stock

The museum also houses a variety of historic passenger and freight cars, including restored interurban coaches and cabooses. Each piece offers a glimpse into different periods and aspects of railroading history.

Interpretive Center and Museum

The B&SV's Interpretive Center and Museum provide additional context and educational insights into the history of railroading in Iowa. Exhibits feature photographs, maps, models, and artifacts that trace the development of the railways and their impact on the region's economy and society.

Delving Deeper into the History

Exploring the history of the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad provides a fascinating insight into the evolution of transportation and the regional development of Iowa.

Fort Dodge, Des Moines and Southern Railroad

The Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad is a segment of the former Fort Dodge, Des Moines and Southern Railroad (FDDM&S), an interurban line that served central Iowa during the early 20th century.

Foundation and Expansion

The FDDM&S was established in 1905, with the ambitious goal of creating an extensive network of interurban electric railways.

By connecting the cities of Fort Dodge, Des Moines, and various smaller communities, the line played a crucial role in regional development.

The efficiency of electric railroads offered a reliable alternative for passenger travel and freight transport, supporting local industries and agriculture.

Technological Advancements

The FDDM&S was at the forefront of technological advancements in rail

transport. The electrification of the line represented a significant leap from steam-powered locomotives, providing cleaner, more efficient service.

The introduction of electric interurban cars also marked a new era in passenger comfort and convenience.

Preservation and Revival

In 1983, the Boone Railroad Historical Society was formed, preserving a portion of the FDDM&S for future generations. The rebranded Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad began operations as a tourist railway and heritage center.

Through the efforts of dedicated volunteers and rail enthusiasts, the BSV Railroad has grown into a thriving attraction, celebrating Iowa’s railroading heritage and natural beauty.

Conclusion

The Boone and Scenic Valley offers a captivating blend of history, natural beauty, and engaging experiences. From scenic train rides and historic exhibits to special events and educational programs, the railroad provides a wealth of opportunities for discovery and enjoyment.

Whether you’re a rail enthusiast, history buff, or simply seeking a memorable day out with family and friends, the BSV Railroad invites you to embark on a journey through time and landscape.

So, pack your sense of adventure, gather your loved ones, and head to the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad for an unforgettable experience.

Whether you’re riding the rails, exploring the museum, or participating in a special event, the BSV Railroad promises a day filled with wonder, nostalgia, and the timeless charm of Iowa’s railroading heritage. Your adventure awaits!
