Indiana Whiskey Tasting Train Rides
Indiana's Whiskey Tasting Train Rides
Published: March 6, 2026
By: Adam Burns
If you’ve ever wished you could step into the golden age of passenger rail—when heavyweight cars, lounge seating, and the steady cadence of jointed rail turned travel into an event—the Indiana Rail Experience (IRE) was built for you. Operated by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society (FWRHS) in partnership with the Indiana Northeastern Railroad, the program offers a mix of family-friendly runs, seasonal specials, and adults-only “night out” excursions across a heritage corridor that links Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.
At the heart of the experience is variety. On one weekend you might be aboard a short scenic ride from Angola with kids enjoying a summer treat; on another, you could be settling into a vintage lounge seat as a historic locomotive pulls you into the sunset for an evening of drinks, live entertainment, and countryside views. IRE describes its operation as both preservation and participation—a place where ticket sales directly support the continued restoration and operation of historic locomotives and passenger cars.
The Railroad Behind the Railroad
One reason the Indiana Rail Experience feels “big” compared with many excursion operations is the scale of the line it calls home. The IRE markets itself as a 100-mile heritage railroad and notes that the Indiana Northeastern revitalized about 100 miles of formerly near-abandoned trackage, now supporting a working short line that handles thousands of freight carloads annually.
Operationally, that partnership matters: it’s what allows IRE trains to stretch beyond a museum loop and actually roam through small towns, farms, woods, and open fields—exactly the kind of scenery that pairs so well with a relaxed onboard social event.
Where To Board
IRE uses multiple boarding points depending on the trip. The organization lists boarding/parking details for departures from Angola and Pleasant Lake, Indiana on its event pages, reflecting how different experiences use different segments of the route.
What’s consistent across the calendar is the “vintage consist” approach. IRE emphasizes mid-century passenger trains and historic locomotives, with options that range from standard coach seating to premium lounge and private-car accommodations, depending on the event.
The Wine & Whiskey Train
Among IRE’s most talked-about offerings is the Wine & Whiskey Train—an adults-only, evening-style trip that leans into the best parts of classic rail travel: atmosphere, comfort, and a little celebration.
What it is
IRE bills the Wine & Whiskey Train as a three-hour, steam-powered sunset excursion with custom charcuterie and an onboard cash bar serving beer, wine, and craft cocktails. Total trip timing is listed as roughly 3–4 hours, which typically accounts for boarding, departure procedures, and the full onboard experience.
When it runs
Schedules can change year to year. IRE’s Wine & Whiskey Train page notes dates are “TBA 2026” and encourages riders to join the mailing list for ticket access.
For context, the posted 2025 schedule shows a Wine & Whiskey Train (steam) date in late May, illustrating that the event has been offered in prior seasons even if next year’s exact dates are still pending.
The onboard vibe
This isn’t a formal “dinner train” in the traditional plated-meal sense. Think more cocktail lounge on rails: a curated snack spread, a bar program, and the natural entertainment of a steam locomotive working through rural Indiana at golden hour. If your ideal night out is equal parts scenery and socializing, it’s a strong fit.
IRE’s policies also note that some events—including Wine & Whiskey—typically feature a Cigar Car, and that access rules can vary by ticket class (some trips allow visitors from other classes to stop in and enjoy open-air seating or entertainment).
Steam power and star power
Many Wine & Whiskey outings have been marketed around Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive No. 765, the FWRHS flagship. FWRHS highlights No. 765 as a famed Berkshire-type steam locomotive and a centerpiece of its public mission and excursions. And because IRE events and schedules rotate between steam and diesel depending on operational needs, the Wine & Whiskey Train’s “steam-powered” billing is part of what makes it feel like a marquee date on the calendar.
Seating, Classes, and How to Choose
IRE events commonly offer multiple accommodation tiers—everything from basic coach to first-class and private-car options—though the exact lineup and pricing depend on the specific departure. For the Wine & Whiskey Train, the organization directs riders to “see accommodations below” for ticket pricing, reinforcing that class selection is central to the experience.
A practical way to decide:
-
Go Deluxe/Coach if you mainly want the ride, the bar, and the scenery at the best value.
-
Go First Class/Lounge if you care about space, ambiance, and a more “classic Pullman-era” feel.
-
Go Private if you’re celebrating (birthday, anniversary, small group outing) and want your own dedicated space.
Final Thoughts
Some rail excursions are mainly about “a train ride.” The Indiana Rail Experience aims for something broader: a rotating calendar of theme-forward experiences—from family outings to adult social trains—powered by preservation-grade equipment and run as a major fundraising engine for historic restoration.
If you’re specifically drawn to the Wine & Whiskey Train, the appeal is simple: steam at sunset, vintage seating, a charcuterie-forward snack spread, and a bar program that turns a scenic run into a memorable night out.
