Nevada Chirstmas Train Rides: A Complete Guide
Published: March 11, 2025
By: Adam Burns
The holiday season brings a special kind of magic, and what better way to celebrate than aboard a festive train ride? Nevada, known for its expansive desert landscapes and vibrant cities, also holds a few hidden gems for those looking to experience the yuletide spirit in a unique way. From whimsical journeys with themed entertainment to picturesque rides through wintry scenes, these Christmas-themed train rides offer a delightful escape for families and holiday enthusiasts alike.
Virginia & Truckee Railroad
Events
Operating from the historic wild-west town of Virginia City, the Candy Cane Express offers a charming holiday experience steeped in history and tradition. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad once played a pivotal role in Nevada's mining era, and today it transforms into a festive journey like no other.
The railroad also hosts one other holiday event, the Electric Holiday Train of Lights where the entire family can enjoy Christmas lights long the route until arriving at the festively decorated Santa's Workshop and see Santa Claus himself from the workshop platform.
Experience
The Candy Cane Express is a shorter, family-friendly ride perfect for those with younger kids. As the vintage train rolls along its scenic route, guests enjoy the stunning winter vistas of the Comstock Lode area. Christmas carols fill the air, and Santa Claus makes a special appearance to greet each child and bring a festive surprise.
The Electric Holiday Train of Lights is similar but does not include a direct visit from Santa.
Tips
Arrive Early: Virginia City transforms into a holiday wonderland, complete with shops and attractions. Arriving early allows time to explore the historic district.
Layers are Key: Dress in layers, as the weather can be unpredictable in mountain regions.
Local Dining: Consider dining in one of Virginia City's cozy eateries afterwards for a complete holiday outing.
V&T History
The Virginia and Truckee Railroad (V&T Railroad) is a significant part of American railroading history, particularly in the context of the silver mining boom of the 19th century. The railroad was conceived during the flourishing days of the Comstock Lode, a major lode of silver ore located under the eastern slope of Mount Davidson in Nevada. The discovery, made public in 1859, led to a silver rush that intensified the need for a reliable transportation system to move ore and supplies.
The idea of a rail line was championed by industrialist William Sharon and other investors who understood the logistical challenges and economic potential tied to the Comstock mining operations. Construction of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad began in 1869. The railroad was intended to connect Virginia City, a bustling mining town, with Carson City, Nevada's capital, and indirectly to the Central Pacific Railroad, which would enhance access to regional and national markets.
The construction of the track was a significant engineering feat given the mountainous terrain between Virginia City and Carson City. The V&T Railroad officially opened on September 28, 1869, connecting Virginia City with Carson City. This connection played a crucial role in the region's economic development, efficiently transporting ore from the mines to reduction mills, and then onwards to distant markets.
By 1872, the railroad extended to Reno, connecting with the Central Pacific Railroad. This extension was pivotal, allowing the V&T to move goods quickly across a broader area and increasing its regional influence. Known as the "Queen of the Short Lines," the V&T Railroad was renowned for its profitability and high-quality service during the peak years of Comstock mining production.
The Virginia and Truckee Railroad wasn’t just a facilitator of mining operations; it became a part of the cultural and social fabric of Nevada. It was known for its beautifully maintained locomotives and efficient operation, attracting not just businessmen, but also tourists and locals alike.
However, like many other railroads dependent on specific industries, the fortunes of the V&T Railroad were closely tied to the fluctuations of the silver mining industry. As ore production declined near the end of the 19th century, so did the railroad's prosperity. The demand for transportation services diminished, and the railroad strained to remain solvent. By the early 20th century, the rise of automobiles and alternative transportation modes further eroded its profitability.
Regular passenger services ceased in 1938, and by 1950, freight operations had dwindled significantly. The last regular runs took place in 1950, and the company was formally abandoned in 1950. Locomotives, cars, and other rolling stock were sold off, some becoming part of Hollywood movies, ensuring that while the V&T Railroad may have ceased operations, its legacy lived on in popular culture.
In 1976, efforts to revive a portion of the line were successful, and the Virginia and Truckee Railroad resumed operations as a heritage railway. Today, the V&T Railroad is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a nostalgic glimpse into the golden age of railroading while preserving an important chapter in the history of the American West.
Final Thoughts
Christmas-themed train rides in Nevada provide families and holiday lovers with enchanting experiences, combining the nostalgia of train travel with the heartwarming traditions of Christmas.
Whether you're journeying to the North Pole aboard the Candy Cane Express or Christmas lights from the Electric Holiday Train of Lights, these festive train rides promise a unique and memorable way to embrace the holiday spirit.
Be sure to book your tickets early, dress appropriately for the season, and immerse yourself in the magic and joy that these unique holiday experiences offer. After all, there's something truly special about seeing Nevada's breathtaking landscapes roll by while sipping cocoa and humming a Christmas carol.
