South Shore Line Timetables (August, 1952)

Included here is the Chicago, South Shore & South Bend Railroad's timetable listing from the August, 1952 edition of the "Official Guide Of The Railways." The South Shore Line, originated on November 30, 1901, as the Chicago & Indiana Air Line Railway. Reorganized in 1904 as the Chicago, Lake Shore and South Bend Railway, it completed its 90-mile electric interurban line from Michigan City to South Bend by July 1908, with full Chicago access by 1909. Branded the South Shore Line, it launched freight service in 1916 to serve northwest Indiana’s booming steel and coal industries.
Samuel Insull acquired the struggling line in 1925, reorganizing it as the CSS&SB and converting electrification to 1,500-volt DC. While most U.S. interurbans faded after World War II, the South Shore survived through freight revenue. Acquired by the Chesapeake & Ohio in 1967, it faced repeated bankruptcies. In 1990, following the latest filing, passenger operations transferred to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD). Anacostia Rail Holdings took over freight as a Class III carrier.
Today the CSS&SB continues freight service on tracks shared with NICTD’s commuter trains—the last operating interurban railroad in the United States. (124 words)
