New Jersey Wine Tasting Train Rides
Published: February 22, 2026
By: Adam Burns
In New Jersey, where the scenic landscapes of rolling hills and vast vineyards meet historic towns and modern innovation, a unique type of adventure awaits: wine tasting train rides.
This delightful journey is not just about sipping wine; it’s an immersive experience that combines the romance of train travel with the allure of wine culture. If you're seeking a unique outing or a memorable way to celebrate a special occasion, wine tasting train rides in New Jersey offer an experience unlike any other.
The Allure of Rail Travel
There's something inherently nostalgic and enchanting about traveling by train. The rhythmic chugging, the gentle sway of the cars, and the panoramas unfolding outside your window all contribute to a leisurely and scenic journey. New Jersey, with its rich history in rail transport, boasts several heritage railways that offer more than just transit from one point to another but provide an experiential journey into the past.
Combining the Best of Both Worlds: Wine and Rail
New Jersey has no shortage of vineyards, and the state is recognized as one of the emerging wine regions in the United States. The climate and fertile soil make it ideal for cultivating a variety of grapes. By pairing train journeys with wine tastings, travelers are offered an opportunity to explore the rich terroir of New Jersey's wine country from the comfort of a historical train.
What to Expect from Your Wine Tasting Train Ride
Wine tasting trains offer more than just tasting sessions. Here’s what you can typically expect:
Wine Tastings: At each vineyard visit, guests are introduced to a selection of wines that showcase the diversity and quality of local production.
Knowledge Enrichment: Tours often include guided sessions where you learn about the viticulture of New Jersey, including grape varieties, winemaking techniques, and historical anecdotes.
Gourmet Pairings: Many trains provide gourmet pairings, such as artisanal cheeses, olives, and charcuterie, chosen to enhance and complement the wines.
Scenic Views: Experience the beauty of New Jersey's countryside, from rolling vineyards to historic towns, all without the need for a designated driver.
Delaware River Railroad Excursions
The Delaware River Railroad Excursions offer a charming and nostalgic way to explore the picturesque landscapes of New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Operated by the New York Susquehanna & Western Technical & Historical Society, these excursions provide passengers with a unique journey aboard vintage trains along the scenic Delaware River. The trains run from Phillipsburg, New Jersey, and provide an immersive experience reminiscent of the golden age of rail travel.
Passengers can choose from a variety of themed rides throughout the year, including the popular "The Polar Express" during the holiday season, "The Great Pumpkin Train" in autumn, and wine or beer tasting excursions. Each ride features beautifully restored railcars and offers breathtaking views of the rolling hills, lush forests, and serene river scenes.
"The Winery Train" is the only such wine tasting event offered in New Jersey. It operates on only a few select dates each year. The excursion runs to the end of the line at Riegelsville whereupon guests will tour the nearby Vlla Milagro Vineyards and have the chance to sample their fine guests.
The railroad also features interactive stations where guests can learn about the rich history of railroading in the region. Family-friendly, these excursions are perfect for train enthusiasts, families, and visitors seeking a quaint and educational outing.
Whether enjoying a peaceful ride or engaging in themed events, the Delaware River Railroad Excursions promise an unforgettable travel experience that echoes the romance and heritage of historic railways.
Final Thoughts
Wine tasting trains offer a unique way to experience the state’s burgeoning wine culture while relishing the timeless romance of rail travel.
Whether you're a wine aficionado, a train enthusiast, or simply someone looking for a delightful day trip, these excursions provide an exceptional blend of history, scenery, and sensory pleasures.
As you sip and savor your way through the Garden State’s vineyards, you’ll create memories that last long after the final stop. So, all aboard the wine train—where a journey of discovery and delight waits around every bend.
