Florida Murder Mystery Dinner Train Rides
Published: February 20, 2026
By: Adam Burns
The Seminole Gulf Railway (SGLR) is, at heart, a working short line—moving real freight over a web of track that stitches together communities across Southwest Florida. But it’s also home to one of the region’s most memorable “railfan-meets-date-night” experiences: the Murder Mystery Dinner Train, a rolling theater-and-dining event that has become a signature attraction for the area.
If you’re looking for a classic scenic railroad with open-air coaches and afternoon excursions, Seminole Gulf is a little different. Its passenger offering is built around an evening out—equal parts train ride, performance, and a multi-course meal—aboard a consist of vintage cars pulled through the backroads of Lee and Charlotte counties. Here’s a detailed look at the railway, what it does today, and why its murder mystery dinner trains remain the headliner.
An Active Short Line First
The railroad operates as a freight carrier in South Florida, handling a range of commodities that keep the region’s economy moving—building materials, aggregates, LPG, metals, plastics, recycled materials, and more. It’s not a tiny museum line; it’s a system with over 100 miles of track and multiple segments that reach well beyond Fort Myers, including trackage between North Naples and Arcadia, plus a separate corridor between Oneco (Bradenton) and Sarasota.
That “real railroad” backbone is part of the charm. On any given day, Seminole Gulf’s locomotives may be switching customers, assembling freight cuts, or heading out on the main with cars bound for interchange. And then, as evening arrives, the same company pivots into hospitality mode—welcoming passengers at its Fort Myers station for a completely different kind of run.
The Excursions
Seminole Gulf’s passenger experience is best understood as a dinner train with a show, rather than a conventional excursion railroad. The Murder Mystery Dinner Train is a 3.5-hour round trip that departs from Colonial Station in Fort Myers and travels north, crossing the Caloosahatchee River, then continuing through rural stretches of Lee and Charlotte counties before returning to the same station.
Unlike many tourist railroads where scenery is the headline, here the evening is designed like a “moving event.” The train ride is long enough to feel like a mini-getaway, but structured so the entertainment unfolds in sync with dinner service. Think of it as theater-in-the-round—except the “round” is a string of classic dining cars, and the backdrop is nighttime Florida rolling past the windows.
The Star Attraction: Murder Mystery Dinner Trains
The basic format
The heart of the experience is simple (and reliably fun): you board, you’re seated in a dining car, you’re served a multi-course dinner, and a live comedic mystery plays out around you. Each ticket includes the train ride, the show, and a five-course meal, with entree choices offered onboard.
Shows are presented as interactive whodunits—light on grim realism and heavy on humor, crowd participation, and theatrical twists. The “mystery” isn’t just background ambiance; it’s integrated into the pacing of the evening, building between courses and giving passengers time to compare notes, trade theories, and enjoy the ride.
Departure times and schedule rhythm
One detail that matters when you’re planning: the trains depart promptly, commonly at 6:30 PM, with 5:30 PM departures on Sundays and certain holidays (and you’re typically asked to arrive early for check-in).
Because schedules can change seasonally, the best practice is to confirm your exact date/time on the operator’s schedule page when you’re ready to book.
The “railfan” appeal: equipment and atmosphere
Even if your primary goal is dinner and a laugh, the railroad component is still very real—and for railfans, it’s a treat. Seminole Gulf’s dinner train is often associated with classic first-generation diesel power and a lineup of vintage cars. Public descriptions of the operation note the dinner train’s history of using an EMD F-unit (now a cab car only, the locomotive was built as Baltimore & Ohio #955-A in 1952) and a GE B39-8E as primary power for the trains. In addition, they operate a fleet of vintage passenger cars that lend the experience a mid-century, old-Florida vibe.
Inside, the ambiance is the whole point: table settings, the gentle sway of a moving train, the occasional horn in the distance, and the unique feeling that the “venue” is traveling through the night with you. It’s a format you just can’t replicate in a conventional restaurant.
The Route
Seminole Gulf’s dinner train route isn’t a mountain pass or a cliff-hugging canyon line—it’s something arguably more “Florida-authentic.” The trip moves through the built-up edges of Fort Myers, then transitions into quieter stretches, including the dramatic moment of crossing the Caloosahatchee River.
Depending on the time of year and your departure, you may catch dusk fading into night early in the run, with city lights and industrial scenes giving way to darker rural horizons. That contrast—urban-to-country and back again—works especially well for a mystery show. The outside world becomes a passing scene, while the real action is unfolding at your table and in the aisle beside you.
Beyond the Dinner Train: The Bigger Seminole Gulf Story
Seminole Gulf’s passenger operations draw most of the public attention, but it’s worth emphasizing what makes this railroad unusual: it’s not simply a tourist attraction with a freight sideline—it’s a freight railroad that also hosts a polished visitor experience. That combination gives the dinner train an authenticity you can feel in the ride quality, the route, and the sense that you’re traveling on active rails tied into a much larger regional system.
For visitors to Fort Myers and the surrounding Gulf Coast communities, that’s part of the magic. One night you’re solving a tongue-in-cheek mystery over dinner; the next morning those same tracks are back to hauling the materials that build and supply Southwest Florida.
