California "Valentine's" Train Rides
Published: January 30, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Just minutes from downtown Sacramento, the River Fox Train offers the kind of outing that feels like a mini-vacation: vintage passenger cars, open-air views, and a relaxing roll through Yolo County’s farm country. Operating out of West Sacramento, this excursion railroad has built a calendar that blends scenery with experiences—wine pours, themed parties, dinner-and-entertainment outings, and seasonal specials that turn a simple train ride into an event.
A quick look back: interurban roots to modern excursions
Part of what makes the River Fox Train so fun is the history under the wheels. The line traces back to 1911, when the Northern Electric Company built the route as an electric interurban corridor moving passengers around the Sacramento region. Passenger service ended in 1941, but the tracks continued to play an important role as a freight link connecting Sacramento Valley agriculture with wider markets—long after the last interurban passenger run.
Today, those same rails are the foundation for a modern, experience-focused tourist operation that leans into nostalgia while still feeling contemporary. Travel writers often point out that the River Fox ride is unique because it combines classic passenger equipment with a distinctly Northern California landscape—riverbank views, wetlands, and broad agricultural scenery that changes character with every season.
Where It Runs
Most River Fox Train departures use the West Sacramento boarding location at 18095 County Road 117, West Sacramento, CA 95691 (just off Old River Road). Boarding typically begins 30 minutes before departure, and many of the signature experiences are designed around a roughly two-hour outing (long enough to unwind, snack, sip, and settle into the rhythm of the rails).
The setting is a major part of the appeal. This isn’t a mountain pass or a cliff-hugging canyon line—it’s a peaceful “big sky” countryside route where the scenery comes in layers: ivy-covered woodlands, open fields, riverfront glimpses, and that unmistakable Central Valley horizon. It’s the kind of trip where you look up from your drink and realize you’ve been smiling for the last twenty minutes.
The River Fox “menu” of excursions
River Fox Train experiences are best thought of as themed rides—each one built around a flavor of fun. While offerings can rotate, several core experiences show up consistently:
Yolo Explorer (a classic “refreshing ride”)
If you want an easy first trip, the Yolo Explorer is the one to start with: a relaxed scenic ride with onboard snacks and drinks available, built to showcase the countryside at an unhurried pace. It’s positioned as a “discover Sacramento in a whole new way” kind of outing—simple, scenic, and perfect for newcomers.
Old Vine Express (wine-forward, scenic, and social)
Wine trains are a natural fit for Yolo County, and the Old Vine Express leans into that with a two-hour ride paired with local pours—specifically noting a partnership with Turkovich Family Wines. It’s an “uncork memories” sort of experience: equal parts scenery, conversation, and that celebratory clink of glasses.
Murder Mystery Train (dinner + theater + railfan charm)
For something more interactive, the Murder Mystery Dinner Train adds a live, character-driven storyline to your evening—complete with a meal and dessert. Costumes are optional (but encouraged), and the whole point is to lean in: play detective, laugh with your group, and enjoy the absurdity of a whodunit rolling through the countryside.
Tea experiences: Boba Tea Train & Afternoon Tea Train
Not every train event has to be a formal dinner. River Fox also runs tea-themed outings—one built around boba tea and vendors, and another styled as a classic afternoon tea with “noshes.” These are great options for groups who want something daytime-friendly, lighter, and more “hangout” than “date night.”
Soulful Express (party-on-rails energy)
For guests who want music and a more lively vibe, the Soulful Express is pitched as a moving celebration—dance, sip, and enjoy a scenic backdrop of river and countryside. It’s the kind of event that turns the train itself into the venue.
Seasonal and special-event trains
River Fox also schedules limited-time events tied to holidays and the calendar year—like the Magical Christmas Train and themed celebrations (for example, Lunar New Year experiences). Even when you’re not riding a “holiday train,” that seasonal DNA is part of what keeps River Fox feeling fresh year after year.
Railbikes through the countryside
If you want the rails without the train, River Fox also offers railbiking—an outdoor, pedal-powered way to experience the same corridor. The operation notes that railbike check-in happens at the same West Sacramento address, and it’s run as a reservation-based experience (no physical tickets—your name is your check-in).
Valentine’s Day Express
Among the most popular “special nights” on the River Fox calendar is the Valentine’s Day Express—an evening built for couples, friend groups, and even solo guests who simply want a festive night out.
The experience is framed as more than a dinner reservation: a starlit countryside ride aboard Sacramento’s historic train, designed around connection and celebration—complete with a toast-ready atmosphere as the scenery slides by in the dark.
What makes River Fox’s Valentine’s event especially flexible is that it’s offered in two different styles, depending on the kind of night you want:
-
Sweethearts & Soirées: includes a meal with assigned seating plus a welcome glass of bubbly—ideal for couples or groups who want a classic “dinner date” feel.
-
Meet & Mingle: includes passed hors d’oeuvres, a welcome glass of bubbly, access to an onboard bar, and open seating—perfect for a more social, cocktail-style evening.
River Fox also notes practical details that matter on a night like Valentine’s: arrive 30 minutes early, wear comfortable shoes, free parking, and card-only payments (with the exception of cash tips).
For 2026 listings, event calendars in the Sacramento area specifically show the Valentine’s Day Express occurring on February 14, 2026. To learn more about the train please click here.
