West Virginia, often celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and rich history, offers visitors a unique way to explore its rolling hills and picturesque vineyards: wine tasting train rides.
These journeys blend the romance of rail travel with the sensory delights of wine-tasting, creating a memorable experience for oenophiles and adventurers alike. As the train gently chugs along, guests are treated to a blend of captivating scenery and flavors, making for a truly unforgettable experience.

The Concept of Wine Tasting Trains
The concept of wine tasting trains is relatively novel, offering a fresh perspective on both wine tourism and railroad excursions.
In West Virginia, these excursions combine the state's historic railroads and burgeoning viticulture to offer a captivating journey through its scenic countryside. Passengers can enjoy curated wine tastings while traveling through the lush Monongahela National Forest and over historic bridges, all from the comfort of climated controlled cars.
The Charm of West Virginia’s Railroads
The railroads of West Virginia are steeped in history and charm, winding through rugged Appalachian landscapes and connecting remote parts of the state. While most were eventually built to transport coal several main lines passed through the state such as those owned by the Baltimore & Ohio, Western Maryland, Chesapeake & Ohio, Virginian Railway, and Norfolk & Western.
Today, trains of the Cass Scenic Railroad and the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley offer a window into the past, with refurbished vintage equipment that evoke the golden age of rail travel.
These excursions, while nostalgic, are equipped with modern amenities to ensure passenger comfort. The slow pace of the train allows guests to soak in panoramic views of the state’s natural beauty—from dense forests and roaring rivers to expansive valleys and towering mountains.
Highlighted Train Rides
There is currently only one location in the Mountain State offering some type of wine aboard their trains, the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley based out of Elkins.
Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad
This line - which operates components of the historic Western Maryland Railway's coal and lumber branches south of Elkins - offers their seasonal "Elkins Murder Mystery Wine Train" during two different days each summer.
This popular event, which usually sells out very quickly, travels through the scenic Randolph County wilderness and along the Shavers Fork. The train features historic passenger cars, each lovingly restored to reflect their historical roots, creating a unique ambiance for guests to enjoy their wine.
As the train meanders along, passengers can enjoy the murder mystery special and enjoy fine wine tastings from Lambert’s Winery of nearbly Weston while also enjoying appetizers on-board. The trip lasts about 4 1/2 hours.
More About The D&GVR
The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad is a scenic rail line located in West Virginia, offering a nostalgic journey through some of the state’s most picturesque landscapes. Established in 1998, this heritage railroad operates along historic tracks that date back over a century. It provides a range of excursion experiences, highlighting the rich history and beauty of the Appalachian region.
Today, the railroad maintains three separate operations which are managed under one umbrella; the original D&GV based out of Durbin that utilizes a section of the old Cheapeake & Ohio's Greenbrier Branch, the well-known Cass Scenic Railroad, and finally the Western Maryland's lines running south and east of Elkins.
Throughout the year the railroad offers themed and seasonal rides, including fall foliage tours, holiday-themed excursions, and more, enticing both tourists and train enthusiasts alike.
The D&GV not only serves as an attraction but also as a preserver of historic railroading, with its meticulously maintained vintage coaches and locomotives. By offering these immersive experiences, the railroad supports local tourism, bringing economic and cultural benefits to the region.
