New Mexico ~ Wine Tasting ~ Train Rides
Published: January 27, 2026
By: Adam Burns
New Mexico, known for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage, is often overlooked as a wine-producing region.
Yet, with its unique high-desert terroir and a winemaking history that stretches back over 400 years, New Mexico is home to some of the most distinctive wines in the United States.
For oenophiles and adventure seekers alike, wine tasting trains in the Land of Enchantment provide a unique opportunity to explore the region's vineyards in comfort and style.
A Glimpse into New Mexico's Winemaking Heritage
New Mexico's winemaking history is rooted in its Spanish colonial past. In the early 1600s, Spanish missionaries and settlers introduced viticulture to the region, planting the first wine grapes along the banks of the Rio Grande.
The region's climate, characterized by hot days and cool nights, combined with its diverse soil types, provided an ideal environment for cultivating a variety of grape types. Over centuries, this tradition has evolved, leading to a modern winemaking industry that emphasizes both innovation and tradition.
Locations
Sky Railway
Sky Railway is one of only two locations in New Mexico offering a wine tasting experience. This innovative and adventurous rail experience operates along the historic rail lines originally used by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, offering a unique blend of scenic travel, rich history, and immersive storytelling.
What they describe as the "New Mexico Wine Train" lasts 2 1/2 to 3 hours and features a number of local wines, a charcuterie box and live entertainment.
More About The Railroad
The Sky Railway project was initiated by a group of visionaries, including George R.R. Martin, the acclaimed author of the "Game of Thrones" series, along with fellow investors. Their aim was to preserve the rich history of the rails while introducing modern, themed rail experiences that appeal to a wide range of passengers.
Located primarily between the vibrant city of Santa Fe and the artistically renowned town of Lamy, Sky Railway transforms a traditional train journey into an extraordinary adventure
The railway offers a variety of thematic journeys that depart from its main depot in Santa Fe, allowing passengers to experience New Mexico's breathtaking landscapes in an entirely new way. These themes can range from supernatural mysteries and science fiction adventures to historical narratives, complete with live performances, interactive storytelling, and specially curated events.
Each excursion is carefully crafted to deliver a unique blend of entertainment, education, and engagement, with the goal of immersing passengers in a world where reality meets imagination.
The experiences are often accompanied by live music, theatrical performances, and storytelling, designed to captivate the senses and transport passengers to another world as they travel through the captivating scenery of Northern New Mexico.
Sky Railway's importance lies not only in its contribution to tourism and entertainment but also in its role in preserving and celebrating the history and culture of the region.
By utilizing existing rail lines and engaging local artists and performers, the railroad effectively merges past and present, drawing attention to the area's cultural heritage and stimulating local economies.
A Voyage through New Mexico's Wine Regions
New Mexico's wine regions, each with its own unique character and offerings, form the backdrop of the wine train's itineraries. Some of the notable regions explored by the train include:
The Middle Rio Grande Valley: As one of the most historic wine regions in the state, the Middle Rio Grande Valley is celebrated for its fertile land and proximity to river water sources. Vineyards here produce a wide range of grape varietals, contributing to the diversity of wines showcased on the train.
The Mimbres Valley: Known for its sunny days and cool mountain breezes, the Mimbres Valley offers an environment conducive to growing robust red wines. The region's winemakers often focus on varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, known for their bold flavors and aromatic profiles.
The Tularosa Basin: With its unique combination of sandy soils and high elevation, the Tularosa Basin is home to vineyards that produce exceptional wines with a distinct mineral character. Guests on the wine train can explore the nuances of wines made from varietals like Chardonnay and Viognier in this unique setting.

Wine tasting train rides offer an unparalleled way to explore the state's burgeoning wine industry while savoring its stunning landscapes and rich cultural traditions. Whether you're a seasoned oenophile or a curious traveler, these journeys provide an unforgettable experience that captivates the senses and enriches the soul.
