South Dakota ~ Murder Mystery ~ Dinner Train Rides
Published: January 28, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Imagine this: you board a charming vintage train, the wheels slowly start to turn, and you're whisked away into a world of intrigue, suspense, and delicious culinary experiences. This is exactly what you can expect from murder mystery dinner train—a unique, immersive event that promises entertainment, excitement, and memories that will linger long after the journey ends.
Unfortunately, these popular events are not currently offered in South Dakota although as recently as a few years ago the Black Hills Central Railroad in Hill City did host these unique excursions. Hopefully one day soon they will return!

The Setting: A Vintage Train
The train itself is a critical part of the experience. Often, the excursions take place on restored vintage trains that echo a bygone era. As you step on board, the charming decor and period-perfect furnishings transport you to a time when rail travel was the epitome of style and sophistication. The slow rocking of the train as it moves along the tracks only adds to the immersive experience, creating a cozy, intimate atmosphere that heightens the suspense.
The Plot Thickens: A Role in the Mystery
Central to the experience is, of course, the unfolding mystery. Each guest becomes an integral part of the story, often assigned a character or given tasks to help unravel the plot. Actors seamlessly blend with guests, weaving a narrative that includes shocking twists, turns, and perhaps even a few red herrings. The story is carefully crafted to keep everyone on their toes, encouraging participants to observe, deduce, and interact with one another to solve the crime.
Culinary Delights
Complementing the thrilling storyline is a sumptuous meal. Throughout the journey, guests enjoy a multi-course dinner that is as much a part of the experience as the mystery itself. Often inspired by the era in which the story is set, the menu features carefully selected dishes that enhance the overall theme of the evening. From appetizers to desserts, each course is crafted to be savored, offering a feast for the senses as you ponder the clues.
A Range of Themes
One of the most exciting aspects of these ex is the diversity of themes and storylines. No two events are exactly alike, with plots varying from classic whodunits to tales of espionage, romance, or supernatural intrigue. Themes might change with the seasons, ensuring that even repeat guests always have something new and exciting to look forward to.
Ideal for All Occasions
Whether you're celebrating a special occasion, planning a unique outing with friends or colleagues, or simply looking for an unforgettable date night, murder mystery dinner trains provide a perfect solution. They offer a refreshing alternative to typical entertainment options, combining fun, food, and adventure in one spectacular package.
Black Hills Central Railroad
The Black Hills Central Railroad, the famous "1880 Train", nestled in the scenic landscapes of South Dakota, offers a nostalgic journey through time with its historic steam trains.
Established in 1957, this heritage railroad operates on tracks laid down in the 1880s during the gold rush era. It was a long time operation of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy.
The route, running between Hill City and Keystone, covers approximately 10 miles of breathtaking views, passing through the heart of the Black Hills National Forest. Known for its historic steam locomotives - notably 2-6-2T #104, 2-6-6-2T #110, and 2-6-6-2T #108 - the railroad features meticulously restored steam and diesel engines, providing a unique experience akin to train travel of yesteryear.
Passengers can enjoy narrated rides that highlight the illustrious history and captivating stories of the region. The Black Hills Central not only serves as a popular tourist attraction, it also holds cultural significance, preserving the rich history of railroading while offering family-friendly adventures through some of South Dakota's most picturesque landscapes.
Tips for First-Timers
If you're new to these unique excursions, here are a few tips to ensure you make the most of your experience:
Engage Fully: Be prepared to immerse yourself in the role and interact with other guests and actors. The more engaged you are, the more enjoyable the experience will be.
Pay Attention to Details: Observing the smallest details can often lead to important clues. Keep your eyes and ears open throughout the adventure.
Dress the Part: Some events encourage guests to come in costume, which adds another layer of fun and authenticity to the experience.
Savor the Meal: Don’t forget to enjoy the culinary aspect—take your time to relish each course as it is served.
Have Fun: Remember, the goal is to enjoy yourself. Whether or not you solve the mystery, the journey is meant to be fun and engaging.
A Unique Adventure
Murder mystery dinner trains offer a unique, engaging, and highly enjoyable experience. They combine the suspense of an interactive mystery with the charm of vintage rail travel and the delight of a gourmet meal.
Whether you're a seasoned detective or a first-time sleuth, these train rides promise an evening of laughter, intrigue, and unforgettable memories. So hop on board, and get ready for a journey that’s as thrilling as it is delicious!
