By: Adam Burns
Nestled among the breathtaking vistas and rugged terrains of Colorado lies a unique fusion of theater, gastronomy, and travel—a murder mystery dinner train.
This immersive experience not only tantalizes the taste buds with gourmet cuisine but also engages the mind with intriguing plots and characters. Let's delve into the allure of these one-of-a-kind train rides and discover why they are a must-do for residents and visitors alike.
There is currently only one location in the state hosting this unique event, the Leadville Railroad!
A postcard scene of then-Leadville, Colorado & Southern GP9 #1714 leading an excursion on the railroad. Today, the scenic train is known simply as the Leadville Railroad. The locomotive was built as Northern Pacific GP9 #241 in 1955.
The Allure of the Murder Mystery Dinner Train Ride
Murder mystery dinner trains combine the best of both worlds: the scenic beauty of Colorado's landscapes and the drama of live theater. Imagine cruising through the majestic Rocky Mountains or the expansive plains while a thrilling mystery unfolds right before your eyes. These rides transform an ordinary dinner into an exciting experience where guests become sleuths, piecing together clues to solve a fictional crime.
Setting the Scene: What to Expect
The Journey Begins: Upon arrival, guests are welcomed on board beautifully restored passenger cars. The ambiance is set with period-appropriate decor, transporting guests to another era.
A Feast for the Senses: No murder mystery dinner train ride would be complete without an impressive culinary spread. Guests are treated to a multi-course meal, tailored to match the theme of the evening. Fine wines and decadent desserts accompany the gourmet dishes, providing a delightful gastronomic experience.
The Mystery Unfolds: As the train chugs along its scenic route, professional actors mingle with guests, weaving a tale of intrigue and suspense. Participants are drawn into the story, interacting with the characters and gathering clues. The goal? To solve the mystery before the train returns to its station.
A Theatrical Encore: As the journey nears its end, the mystery reaches its climax. Guests present their theories, and the plot twists to reveal the culprit. The evening concludes with a dramatic resolution, applause, and perhaps a few surprises.
Locations
Leadville Railroad
The Leadville Railroad, officially known as the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad, is a scenic train ride offering a unique glimpse into the rich history of Colorado's mining days.
Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, this heritage railway takes passengers on a captivating journey through breathtaking landscapes, including the Arkansas River Valley and Mt. Massive. The train operates primarily out of the historic town of Leadville, which stands as one of the highest incorporated cities in the United States.
During the ride, passengers experience stunning panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks and sprawling wilderness, while informative narration brings the area's history to life.
Originally part of the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad - and later the Colorado & Southern/Chicago, Burlington & Quincy - the line played a vital role in the silver mining boom of the late 19th century. Today, the Leadville Railroad is a popular tourist attraction, offering themed rides and special events that celebrate the vibrant cultural and geological tapestry of the region.
This fall be sure to book their "A Matchless Murder", a unique comedy/murder mystery dinner train experience held on a single weekend in October.
Why Choose a Murder Mystery Dinner Train?
Unique Entertainment: Unlike conventional theater shows, these train rides offer dynamic interaction. Guests become part of the story, adding an element of personal involvement and challenge.
Spectacular Scenery: Colorado’s natural beauty is unparalleled. Enjoying a captivating mystery while passing through some of the state's most breathtaking locales is an experience like no other.
A Taste of History: The historical significance of these railways provides an educational twist to the entertainment. Guests gain insights into the past, adding depth to the travel experience.
Perfect for Special Occasions: Whether it’s a birthday celebration, a romantic date, or a corporate event, murder mystery dinner train rides offer a memorable option for group outings.
Tips for Your Journey
Dress the Part: To fully immerse yourself, participate in the themed dress code. It enhances the experience and is an excellent opportunity for some fun photos.
Engage with the Actors: Don’t be shy—interact with the cast members. They are skilled at guiding guests and providing hints without giving too much away.
Stay Observant: Keep your eyes and ears open. Clues can be subtle, and every detail might lead you closer to solving the mystery.
Have Fun: While it’s exciting to solve the mystery, remember that the ultimate goal is to enjoy the ride, the company, and the beautiful scenery.
Murder mystery dinner trains offer a delightful twist on traditional theater and dining experiences. Combining the allure of mystery with the beauty of train ride, these excursions provide a unique form of entertainment that captivates the imagination.
