DM&IR Railroad Timetables (March, 1940)

Published: May 15, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Highlighted here is the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range's timetable listing from the March, 1940 edition of the "Official Guide Of The Railways."  The “Missabe Road” was Minnesota’s legendary iron-ore hauler. The Duluth & Iron Range was chartered in 1874; under Charlemagne Tower it opened a 68-mile line from Two Harbors to the Soudan Mine and shipped the state’s first trainload of ore on July 31, 1884. In 1891 the Duluth, Missabe & Northern formed to serve the newly discovered Mesabi Range. Both roads passed to U.S. Steel in 1901 and were leased together in 1930. In 1938 they merged with smaller carriers to create the DM&IR. For seven decades the railroad moved record tonnages—peaking near 50 million tons a year during World War II—from the Iron Ranges to Lake Superior docks at Duluth and Two Harbors. Spun off from U.S. Steel in stages, it was acquired by Canadian National in 2004 and formally merged into the CN system in 2011.
