Switchers

The yard fleet was a mix from the first year. Electro-Motive built SW1s 101–103 in the spring and early summer of 1939, serials 880–882. American Locomotive’s two early switchers, 100 and 150, followed in April 1939 and March 1940, serials 69083 and 69254. General Electric No. 51, serial 12496, was built in July 1939 and sold to the Merrilees Equipment Company in 1961. Eight more SW1s, 104–111, filled out the class through June 1949. Nos. 109 and 110 later became Norfolk & Western 3109 and 3110.

Alco’s S-1s were a longer story. No. 1 had been Des Moines Union No. 1, serial 69190, built in May 1940 and acquired in January 1962. It was scrapped that October. No. 2 had been New Jersey, Indiana & Illinois No. 1, serial 69196, built in August 1940. Nine more S-1s, 151–159, were delivered from July 1941 through March 1948. Thirteen S-2s and three S-4s did the heavier yard work. S-2s 320 and 321 and S-4s 322–324 were the ones that took a clean run of Norfolk & Western numbers, 3320–3324. S-2 No. 325 was Nickel Plate No. 5, built in July 1942 and acquired in May 1964.

Baldwin’s eight locomotives were all switchers. VO-660 No. 200 came in July 1941 and was later leased to the Lake Erie & Fort Wayne as its No. 1. Two DS-4-4-660s, 201 and 202, arrived in February and March 1947. Four VO-1000s, 300–303, were built from 1942 through 1946. DS-4-4-1000 No. 304, serial 73955, came in January 1949, was wrecked, and was rebuilt as a cabless booster.

The Electro-Motive yard engines after the SW1 were thirteen SW8s, eight NW2s, eight SW7s, twelve SW9s, and five SW1200s. Four of the SW8s, 122–124 and 127, were General Motors Diesel products from London. Four of the NW2s came off the Nickel Plate and, before that, the Wheeling & Lake Erie: 346 had been Nickel Plate 98, 347 had been 95, 348 had been 96, and 349 had been 97. No. 350, serial 4159, was built in December 1946. Nos. 351 and 352, serials 7531 and 7532, came in July 1949. No. 353 is a different locomotive: serial 7898, order E1114, built in May 1948 as Indiana Northern 100, later New Jersey, Indiana & Illinois No. 2, and then Wabash 353.

The SW1200s split. Nos. 375–378, serials 18877–18880, were built in January 1954. No. 378 is the Toledo engine above. No. 379, serial 23297, was built in January 1957. Fairbanks-Morse sold four H10-44s, 380–383, and three H12-44s, 384–386. Lima-Hamilton’s twelve switchers, 400–411, arrived in 1950. No. 400 had been demonstrator 1002, serial 9395, built in March at 1,000 horsepower and later rated 1,200. No. 407 had been demonstrator 1003. Two Electro-Motive gas-electrics, 4000 and 4001, were built in 1926. They stand on the railroad’s published list, and they are outside the 366.

Cab units

The freight cabs were an F7 railroad. La Grange built ninety-six F7A cabs and nine F7B boosters. General Motors Diesel at London built twenty-two more cabs: twenty numbered from 1155 and 1155A through 1164 and 1164A, serials A125–A144, in December 1950 and January 1951, and the pair 1189 and 1189A, serials A487 and A488, in April 1953. That is 127 F7 frames. In 1961 the cabs and boosters were renumbered into the 600s, odds and evens. No. 1172A never became 692. It had been wrecked and scrapped in November 1959, and it is still in the built count. Nos. 1168, 1170, and 1180A were wrecked in April 1965. No. 1183 went to the Ann Arbor in November 1963. After the renumbering, 689, 690, 697, 703, 705, 712, 714, 715, and 717 through 718 were leased to the Central Railroad of New Jersey.

Alco’s freight cabs were ten FA-1s and five FB-1s, delivered from January through March 1949 and renumbered 800–814 in 1961. They were traded back to General Electric in March and April 1962, and the trucks went under the new U25Bs. Four FA-2s, 820–823, were Ann Arbor cabs, 52A, 55A, 50A, and 55, built in December 1950, acquired in 1963, and traded to Alco in July 1965.

The passenger Alcos were four PA-1s, 1020, 1020A, 1021, and 1021A, serials 77081–77084, built in May 1949. In 1961 they became 1050–1053. The Delmar photograph, about 1960, still shows the original series. The May 1962 photograph at Decatur shows 1053 after the renumbering, beside E8A 1009 and E7A 1001.

Four E7As opened the Electro-Motive passenger fleet. The first No. 1000, serial 3226, was built in August 1946 and was later 1002A and then 1017. The other three, 1001A, 1001, and 1002, were on the roster by March 1949. No. 1001A became 1016 in the 1961 renumbering. Fourteen E8As followed. The second No. 1000 is one of them, serial 15063, built in October 1951 and later Norfolk & Western 3800. It is a different locomotive from the E7A that had carried 1000. The other thirteen are 1003–1015. The Norfolk & Western numbers that followed this fleet are 3803–3812 and 3815.

Road switchers

The GP7 was the road switcher that replaced the Mikados, thirty-four of them, built from August 1950 through January 1953. One, No. 453, serial A148, came from London in January 1951. No. 474, serial 17080, was built in August 1952 with a steam generator. The Dearborn photograph shows it on February 10, 1955. No. 454, serial 14408, was completed in July 1951 and is one of the thirty-four. The published Norfolk & Western list leaves 454 blank and carries 3450–3453 and 3455–3483 for the rest.

Twelve GP9s, 484–495, were built in 1954 and 1956. Eight GP35s, 540–547, followed in April 1964. Seven more GP35s had been ordered as Wabash 548–554 and were completed in November 1964 as Norfolk & Western 1302–1308, serials 29658–29664. The lease was already in effect. Those seven are not in the 366. Fifteen U25Bs, 500–514, were built from May through August 1962. No. 512 was wrecked in October 1964 and was not renumbered. Fourteen of the class later became Norfolk & Western 3516–3529. A U25B completed in February 1965 became Norfolk & Western 3515, the replacement for 512. It never carried a Wabash number.

Fairbanks-Morse’s road engines were eight H24-66 Train Masters. Nos. 550 and 551 had been demonstrators TM-1 and TM-2, serials 24L730 and 24L731. In 1964 the Wabash renumbered them 598 and 599. The Norfolk & Western numbers were 3598 and 3599. Six more, delivered as 552 and 552A, 553 and 553A, and 554 and 554A, came in April and May 1956, serials 24L891–24L896. They were renumbered into the 590s and later became Norfolk & Western 3592–3597.

The last new Alco hoods were seven C424s, B900–B906, serials 3372-01 through 3372-07, built in March 1964. They had been an order for the National Railways of Mexico, cancelled before delivery, and they arrived as Wabash locomotives. B902 was wrecked in October 1964 and was not renumbered. The other six later carried Norfolk & Western numbers in the 3900s. Seven C425s the Wabash had ordered were delivered as Norfolk & Western 1000–1006. They are outside this list.

Roster

The quantity column adds to 366. A blank cell is empty. Later Norfolk & Western numbers are the same frames. Gas-electrics 4000 and 4001, the GP35s completed as 1302–1308, the C425s delivered as 1000–1006, and the February 1965 U25B are outside the table.
