Maine's Tea Tasting Train Rides
Published: February 12, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Tucked into the woods and rolling fields of Alna, Maine, the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum (WW&F) offers one of the most immersive narrow-gauge experiences in North America: real steam, real timetable discipline, and a living railroad that keeps growing a little farther into the Sheepscot Valley every season. Unlike many museums where the story is told mostly behind ropes, the WW&F is a place where history moves—literally—on two-foot rails, with volunteers rebuilding a long-lost common-carrier railroad one mile at a time.
And while the museum’s regular steam train rides are a joy in themselves, the special events are where WW&F’s charm becomes something even more memorable—especially the Mother’s Tea & Luncheon, an elegant, full-service tea experience reached by train.
Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum 0-4-4-T #9 leads an excursion in 2025.
Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum
The WW&F Museums is currently the only location in the state hosting a tea train experience. Their "Mother's Day Tea Train" is, of course, hosted to celebrate the moms out there during Mother's Day. The train features teas and a luncheon from Back River Bistro with the excursion lasting about 1 1/2 hours.
More About The Museum
Founded in 1989, the museum aims to recreate the experience of traveling and working on this unique railway, which originally operated from 1895 until its closure in 1933. The museum's volunteers and enthusiasts have achieved remarkable progress in restoring vintage locomotives, rolling stock, and over two miles of track. This ongoing effort allows visitors to witness and experience steam-powered train rides through the scenic countryside, offering an authentic glimpse into the past.
The museum is not only focused on restoration but also on education. It offers a variety of programs, events, and activities that engage visitors of all ages in the history and mechanics of narrow-gauge railroading. Special events, such as steam festivals and themed train rides, provide interactive experiences that highlight different aspects of historical railroading life and technology.
The WW&F Railway Museum also plays a significant role in local tourism, attracting railroad enthusiasts, families, and history buffs from near and far. Its dedication to authenticity and meticulous attention to detail have made it a renowned destination for those interested in the history of rail transport in America.
Overall, the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum serves as both a tribute to the bygone era of the narrow-gauge railways and a vibrant community project that bridges the past with the present, fostering an appreciation for industrial heritage and craftsmanship.
Today
A typical day at the WW&F begins at Sheepscot Station, the railroad’s primary departure point in Alna. From there, the museum operates scenic steam train rides through the Sheepscot Valley landscape—woods, open meadows, and that particular “quiet Maine” atmosphere that makes the chuff of exhaust and the click of jointed rail stand out even more. The museum emphasizes interpretation and authenticity: you’re not just riding behind steam power—you’re watching volunteers run a railroad, with conductors, shop work, and historically inspired infrastructure all around you.
The museum also publishes seasonal schedules and special-event calendars. For example, its 2026 calendar notes that trains depart from Sheepscot Station (97 Cross Road, Alna) and outlines regular operating periods plus a lineup of special events throughout the year.
Mother’s Tea & Luncheon Train
Among WW&F’s signature experiences, the Mother’s Tea & Luncheon stands out because it blends two things that feel made for each other: a refined tea service and a gentle steam train journey to reach it.
The premise: arrive by narrow gauge
The museum frames the event as a Mother’s Day weekend celebration that includes a round-trip train ride from Sheepscot Station to the luncheon site and back—so the transportation becomes part of the occasion, not just a way to get there.
The food: a catered, full-service tea luncheon
The Mother’s Tea is presented as a full-service tea luncheon featuring savory bites and sweets—with “plenty of tea, of course.” In recent event listings, the catering has been handled by Back River Bistro, with an emphasis on seasonal Maine-grown and Maine-made ingredients.
The atmosphere: live music and a “special occasion” feel
This isn’t a paper-cup refreshment stop. WW&F’s event description highlights an elegant setting—complete with a live harpist—which reinforces that this is meant to feel like a true Mother’s Day outing rather than just “a train ride with snacks.”
When it runs
Because WW&F’s event schedule can change year to year, it’s best to treat the Mother’s Tea as an annual Mother’s Day–season feature and check the museum’s current calendar when planning. That said, WW&F’s published 2026 calendar lists Mother’s Tea & Luncheon with Back River Bistro on Saturday, May 9, with additional related dates shown immediately after in the special-events section.
Final Thoughts
Plenty of heritage railroads offer scenic rides; the WW&F’s magic is that it feels like you’re watching a historic railroad being reborn in real time. Track is extended, equipment is restored, stations and facilities are built, and the operating experience stays grounded in Maine two-footer tradition. Maine tourism resources regularly highlight the museum as a distinctive attraction where visitors can ride steam, explore the railroad environment, and learn how steam-era railroading actually worked.
And for non-railfans? That’s where experiences like the Mother’s Tea & Luncheon Train shine. It’s welcoming, scenic, and intentionally celebratory—an “occasion” that just happens to be delivered by a narrow gauge steam train.
