Nevada St. Patrick's Day Train Rides
Nevada St. Patrick's Day Train Rides

Few railroads are as tightly intertwined with the myth and muscle of the American West as the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. In the late 19th century, when the Comstock Lode was transforming Nevada into a global mining headline, the V&T became the crucial link between ore-rich mountain towns and the mills, markets, and mainline connections beyond. Today, restored segments of the “Queen of the Short Lines” host scenic excursions and special events that blend living history with pure entertainment—none more delightfully suspenseful than the Emerald Express Murder Mystery.

Born of the Comstock
The V&T’s origins trace directly to the Comstock’s explosive growth. Virginia City and Gold Hill sat high on the slopes above the Carson River, and moving ore, lumber, machinery, and supplies over primitive roads was expensive, slow, and often unreliable. The solution was steel rails—and an ambitious plan to connect the mining district with Carson City and regional rail links.
Construction on the first segment began in 1869, with the aim of creating a direct, purpose-built railroad corridor between the Comstock communities and Nevada’s capital. The line became famous not only for what it hauled, but for where it ran: rugged grades, tight curvature, and dramatic topography that forced engineering ingenuity into nearly every mile. In its heyday, the V&T carried passengers as well as freight, earning a reputation for style and service that matched the era’s sense of showmanship.
Like many railroads that were born to serve a single dominant industry, the V&T faced hard realities as mining declined and highways competed fiercely for traffic. The original railroad ceased operations in the mid-20th century, with the route later reborn through phased restoration efforts and modern heritage operations.
Two iconic rides: Comstock Route and Carson City–Virginia City
One reason the V&T works so well as a visitor experience is that it offers multiple “doorways” into the railroad’s story—each with a distinct flavor.
The Comstock Train (Virginia City to Gold Hill and back) is the classic short excursion: a narrated round trip that starts from the historic Virginia City depot and descends toward Gold Hill, the birthplace of the Comstock. This is the ride many travelers associate with Virginia City itself—quick, scenic, and packed with character.
For a longer outing, the V&T also operates a Carson City to Virginia City excursion that departs from the Eastgate area in Carson City and runs toward the mining district, creating an all-day style adventure that pairs rail travel with time to explore Virginia City. Depending on the schedule and equipment, you may ride behind steam or diesel power, which adds a second layer of “choose-your-own-adventure” to the experience.
Together, these routes let visitors experience the V&T as both a historic corridor and a modern, event-ready attraction—a perfect foundation for themed trains.
The Emerald Express
The Emerald Express Murder Mystery is the V&T’s St. Patrick’s-flavored twist on its popular theatrical whodunits. The premise is pure vintage melodrama: a valuable Irish-themed treasure (often billed as the “Shamrock of Killarney”) is at the center of the plot, and by the time the train is rolling, something has gone very wrong—there’s been a theft…and then a murder.
Rather than sitting quietly as a passive audience, passengers are invited into the experience. You’ll meet a cast of suspicious characters, each with their own motives and secrets, and the story unfolds as the train moves through Nevada scenery that already looks like a film set. The V&T leans into the fun: guests typically enjoy appetizers and themed beverages—often including wine and the occasional seasonal twist like green beer—as you piece together clues and decide who’s lying, who’s hiding something, and who is capable of murder.
At the end, there’s usually a playful competitive element—prizes for the best and worst guesses—which keeps the tone light even as the plot gets dark. It’s part theater, part railfan experience, part party on rails.
What the on-board experience feels like
Murder mystery trains succeed when they strike the right balance between structure and spontaneity, and the Emerald Express is designed to do exactly that. The train itself provides built-in pacing: boarding and settling in, meeting characters, the first “incident,” the rising suspicion, and the final reveal. Because you’re in a railcar rather than a traditional theater, the experience feels more immersive—characters can move through the aisles, interact up close, and quietly drop clues in conversation.
It’s also a natural fit for groups. Couples can treat it like a unique date; friends can compare notes and form alliances; families (depending on content and age recommendations for a given performance) can enjoy the puzzle-solving aspect. Even if you’re not normally a “theater person,” the setting tends to lower the stakes—nobody expects you to be perfect, and half the fun is making your best guess and seeing how wrong you were.
Final Thoughts
It’s easy to market the Virginia & Truckee as nostalgia (and it absolutely is), but its deeper appeal is that it represents a uniquely Western intersection of industry, landscape, and legend. The railroad was built to serve the Comstock communities and became famous for doing big work in challenging country. Riding today’s V&T excursions—whether a short Comstock loop or a longer Carson City–Virginia City outing—lets visitors experience the geography that shaped Nevada’s history in a way highways simply can’t replicate.
And then there’s the fun factor. The Emerald Express proves that heritage railroads don’t have to choose between “serious history” and “great entertainment.” On this train, you can enjoy a living connection to the Comstock era while laughing at over-the-top suspects, sipping a drink, and trying to catch a killer before the end of the line.
