Connecticut St. Patrick's Day Train Rides
Indiana Ice Cream Tasting Train Rides
Published: February 6, 2026
By: Adam Burns
If you’re looking for a low-stress, family-friendly rail outing that still feels like a real train experience, the Indiana Rail Experience (IRE) has built one of the region’s most approachable excursions around a simple, perfect idea: ride the rails through farm country and enjoy complimentary ice cream along the way. Their Indiana Ice Cream Train is designed for everyone—families with young kids, casual visitors in town for the lake, and even adults who just want an hour away from screens and schedules.
Operating out of downtown Angola, Indiana, these round-trip runs pair vintage passenger equipment with a short, scenic route that showcases the rural landscape of Indiana’s northeast corner. It’s not a day-long commitment, it doesn’t require deep railroad knowledge, and it doesn’t overwhelm first-timers with too many moving parts. You show up, board, settle into your seat, enjoy the ride and your treat, and return right where you started—smiling and maybe planning your next trip before you even reach the platform.
Quick facts at a glance
-
Experience: One-hour, round-trip excursion with complimentary ice cream included
-
Typical departure point: Downtown Angola (with select festival departures in nearby towns)
-
Motive power: Historic diesel on most dates; Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive No. 765 featured on Memorial Day weekend trips
-
Seating mix: Open-window, air-conditioned deluxe coach, adult-only lounge options, and family table seating
What is the Indiana Rail Experience?
The Indiana Rail Experience is a passenger excursion program in northeast Indiana that hosts a variety of seasonal rides—ranging from summer-themed trains to adult-oriented tastings—while leaning into one major strength: the region’s railroad heritage still feels alive. Their schedule often mixes approachable “gateway” events (like the Ice Cream Train) with special excursions that appeal to longtime enthusiasts.
The Ice Cream Train sits at the center of that mission. It’s a practical, repeatable event that fits summer tourism patterns (especially around Angola’s lake culture), yet it still delivers the atmosphere people want: vintage cars, a real railroad right-of-way, and the unmistakable rhythm of a train rolling across jointed rail and grade crossings.
The Ice Cream Train experience
The concept: simple, scenic, and sweet
The formula is intentionally straightforward: a short ride through the Indiana countryside paired with complimentary ice cream—served as part of your ticket.
Trips are described as family-friendly round-trips leaving downtown Angola multiple times per day during the summer operating periods. That frequency matters because it makes the event easy to slot into a day already filled with other activities—lake time, shopping, or a festival visit.
How long is the ride?
Expect a one-hour round trip—long enough to feel substantial, but short enough that it works well for kids (and for anyone who’s curious but not ready for an all-day excursion).
Motive Power
One of the most interesting wrinkles—especially for railfans—is that the Ice Cream Train sometimes features Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive No. 765 on Memorial Day weekend trips, while other departures are typically diesel-powered using vintage diesel power.
That’s a big deal because NKP 765 is one of the most famous main-line steam locomotives in preservation, and its presence transforms a casual family outing into a “wow” moment: the bark of the exhaust, the scent of coal smoke and hot oil, the shimmer of heat at the cylinders, and the unmistakable sight of a Berkshire-type locomotive under steam. When it’s a diesel day, the ride still delivers the vintage railroad feeling—just with a different soundtrack and pace.
Route
The Angola departures generally run north toward Fremont or south toward Steubenville, depending on the day and operating plan. That directional variety helps repeat visitors; even if you take the Ice Cream Train twice in a season, you may not be seeing the exact same views in the exact same way.
In addition to Angola-based runs, the program has also offered festival-themed Ice Cream Trains that connect directly with local celebrations—such as Edon Days (Ohio) and Pleasant Lake Days, plus Ashley-Hudson Days—effectively bringing the excursion to the party instead of making everyone travel to one central location.
Boarding Locations
For many dates, boarding is in Angola at: 611 West Maumee Street, Angola, IN 46703.
But certain festival or special dates may use alternate boarding locations, including:
-
Edon Days: 302 S Michigan St, Edon, OH 43518
-
Pleasant Lake Days: SE Railroad St, Pleasant Lake, IN 46779
-
Ashley-Hudson Days: 212 North Wabash Street, Ashley, IN 46705
A smart approach is to confirm the boarding instructions for your specific date when you book—especially if you’re traveling in from out of town.
Seating Options And Pricing
One reason this event works so well is that it offers several seating “styles,” which lets groups choose the vibe they want—open-air breeze, classic coach comfort, or a more adult-oriented lounge atmosphere. The Indiana Rail Experience lists ticket tiers such as:
-
Festival Seat (Open Window): $17
-
Child Deluxe Coach: $15
-
Adult Deluxe Coach: $25
-
Lounge Seat (18+): $35
-
Family Table (seats four): $100
-
Children 3 and under: ride free if they do not occupy a seat (noted for Deluxe Coach)
They also note that Deluxe Coach and Silver Diner seating are air-conditioned, while certain open-window/lounge environments emphasize fresh air and sightseeing.
The Ice Cream
The best part for many riders is that all tickets include ice cream, and the experience is framed as a “beat the heat” summer treat—with service tied to a local ice cream provider (Scoops Ice Cream is specifically mentioned for Angola trips).
Flavor offerings can vary by date (and are sometimes announced closer to the event), but the main appeal is the ritual: you board, you get your ice cream, and suddenly the train ride becomes a summer memory rather than just a mode of transportation.
