North Carolina St. Patrick's Day Train Rides
North Carolina St. Patrick's Day Train Rides
Published: February 1, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Set on the sprawling former Southern Railway Spencer Shops, the North Carolina Transportation Museum is one of those rare places where the site itself is the biggest artifact. What used to be a heavy-maintenance complex for steam locomotives has been transformed into a living, walk-through transportation campus—part rail yard, part exhibit hall, part event venue—where you can still feel the “industrial heartbeat” of a major railroad facility in every brick wall and stretch of track.
While the museum interprets transportation broadly (railroading, automotive, aviation, and more), the railroad DNA is unmistakable. Visitors can explore historic shop buildings, see preserved rolling stock, and ride trains that loop the property—an easy, family-friendly way to understand how the shops functioned in their working years.
One of Bennett Levin's restored Pennsylvania Railroad E8As, #5809, is seen here at the museum in the spring of 2014. Dan Robie photo.
From steam-era powerhouse to museum campus
Construction of the Spencer Shops began in 1896, chosen for its strategic location roughly midway between major terminals—an ideal place to service locomotives and rolling stock moving along a key north–south corridor. The shops were named for Samuel Spencer, the first president of Southern Railway.
At their peak—especially in the late 1940s—the shops employed thousands of workers and helped anchor the surrounding community, which effectively grew up around the facility. As dieselization changed railroad maintenance needs, major repairs shifted elsewhere; the site’s next chapter began when it became the home of the state’s transportation museum.
That lineage matters when you visit: you aren’t just looking at displays about railroading—you’re walking the same ground where locomotives were inspected, repaired, turned, and sent back out onto the main line.
What to see and do on a typical visit
Explore the historic railroad complex
Even without a guided tour, the layout tells a story: the scale of the buildings, the arrangement of tracks, and the purpose-built infrastructure all point back to the site’s working life as a major steam-era servicing point.
Step inside the Bob Julian Roundhouse & Turntable
One of the museum’s signature experiences is the Bob Julian Roundhouse & Turntable—a focal point for exhibits and rail equipment. The museum notes it as the largest still-functioning roundhouse in North America, and it’s a memorable place to see locomotives and cars staged the way they feel like they belong: on shop tracks, under a cathedral-like roof, tied together by the working turntable.
Check out rotating programs and seasonal train rides
The museum’s calendar is intentionally event-rich, which is great for readers looking for “what should we do this weekend?” ideas (and perfect for themed excursions you can feature on American-Rails). The museum highlights seasonal rides, hands-on activities, and special events throughout the year.
Ride the on-site train loop
A core experience is the train ride that stays entirely on museum property. It’s about 25 minutes and is designed to be fun for all ages—more “historic-site tour by rail” than long-distance excursion. The route lets you see surviving service structures and understand how the shops were organized when steam locomotives were serviced here.
St. Patrick’s Day Train Ride
If you’re looking for a single, standout experience to plan around, the museum’s St. Patrick’s Day Train is built for it: a lively, evening dinner-train-style ride that pairs Irish-inspired food and drink with the atmosphere of a heritage railroad setting.
Dates (2026): March 13 & 14, 2026 (evenings)
What the experience is like
Unlike the daytime loop rides—quick, narrated, and family oriented—this is positioned as an adult-friendly (or at least “date-night”) event. The museum invites guests to wear green, bring the Irish spirit, and settle in for an evening that starts before the train even rolls.
A typical flow, as described by the museum:
-
Pre-boarding happy hour with live music, plus appetizers and drinks (including wine and beer).
-
Boarding and departure, with dinner served as you travel the museum trackage.
-
A full Irish-inspired meal served while “riding the rails” at the museum site.
That combination—music, a social hour, then a relaxed meal on the move—makes it easy to recommend as a couple’s outing, a friends’ night out, or even a small-group celebration that doesn’t require complicated logistics.
Why it’s a strong feature for your excursion coverage
From a railfan-and-readers perspective, this event hits multiple high-interest notes at once:
-
Seasonal hook: St. Patrick’s Day content is highly discoverable and shareable every year.
-
Built-in “experience” factor: It’s not just a ride; it’s a food + music + rail setting package.
-
Photogenic setting: Evening light around a historic shop complex and roundhouse campus naturally elevates the atmosphere (and your page imagery).
Why the museum belongs on any North Carolina rail itinerary
Plenty of museums display locomotives. Far fewer can immerse you inside a purpose-built railroad servicing landscape that still reads clearly as a working facility—especially one anchored by an operating roundhouse and turntable. The North Carolina Transportation Museum delivers that sense of place in a way that resonates with casual visitors and serious railroad historians alike—and events like the St. Patrick’s Day Train Ride add a festive, high-energy reason to return even if you’ve visited before.
