Colorado St. Patrick's Day Train Rides
Colorado St. Patrick's Day Train Rides
Published: February 4, 2026

Few heritage railroads feel as alive as the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNG). It isn’t a “museum loop” built for tourists—it’s a hard-won mountain route born of Colorado mining ambition, still threading wild canyon country behind vintage power. The result is an experience that combines living railroad history with some of the most dramatic scenery in the Rockies—often in places you can’t reach by highway. The railroad promotes exactly that sense of stepping back into the “Golden Age,” noting the line has been in continuous operation between Durango and Silverton since 1882 and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
And once a year, the D&SNG leans into pure fun with a St. Patrick’s Day themed run: the Shamrock Express—a festive, green-trimmed excuse to ride into the San Juan backcountry with Guinness and Celtic tunes as your soundtrack.
From Mining Lifeline to Iconic Heritage Railroad
The Durango–Silverton route began as a branch of the Denver & Rio Grande’s narrow gauge network, built to move people, ore, and supplies through rugged terrain where roads were often unreliable or nonexistent. Over time, as mining waned and the 20th century shifted transportation toward highways and trucks, many mountain branches disappeared. The Durango–Silverton line survived—first through its own usefulness, then through its sheer appeal.
Today the D&SNG is widely known for its vintage equipment, classic mountain railroading atmosphere, and its signature pairing of steam-era sights and sounds with a landscape that looks much the way it did more than a century ago. The railroad itself emphasizes that much of the scenery along the line remains unchanged from historic days, a rare claim that rings true as the train hugs the Animas River and winds through steep-walled canyons.
While summer and fall trips to Silverton are the headline journey for many visitors, D&SNG also runs other excursions—especially outside the peak season—often turning the trip into a themed event that still feels rooted in the line’s authentic character.
The Route
Part of the D&SNG magic is that you don’t need to be a railfan to “get it.” The terrain does the storytelling. Even from your seat, you can see why narrow gauge railroads once ruled places like this—tight curves, steep grades, and cliff-hugging alignments that feel engineered for the landscape instead of imposed on it.
In peak season the classic trip is the Durango–Silverton run: a 45-mile journey each way on the historic branch, with time in Silverton before returning to Durango. The railroad describes it as a leisurely trip—about 3½ hours each way—with a layover in town.
But in late winter and early spring, the railroad pivots to shorter scenic adventures that still deliver the best part: remote mountain scenery and that “somewhere far away” feeling. That’s where the Shamrock Express shines, because it takes the party into the wilderness.
Onboard Experience
The D&SNG isn’t a single “product,” but a menu of experiences depending on season and car class. In general, you can expect a classic heritage-rail feel: big windows, the rhythm of jointed rail (or its modern equivalent), and the steady climb out of Durango into tighter canyon country.
The railroad’s special event page for the Shamrock Express also hints at something many riders appreciate: themed touches don’t overwhelm the authenticity. It’s still a real train ride through real mountain country—just with a little extra color, music, and a celebratory vibe.
The Shamrock Express: St. Patrick’s Day, Railroad-Style
The Shamrock Express is the D&SNG’s once-a-year nod to Irish cheer—a St. Patrick’s Day excursion to Cascade Canyon, deep in the San Juan National Forest.
For 2026, the railroad lists the Shamrock Express for Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
What makes it special?
It’s the combination of a legitimate wilderness rail journey with a relaxed, social “event train” atmosphere:
St. Patrick’s Day décor throughout the train (expect green accents, playful touches, and a festive look that reads well in photos).
Guinness available for purchase—with the railroad noting it will be offered in first class cars and also available in the concession car.
A generally lively vibe that outside coverage describes as including Celtic musicians and a fun, participatory atmosphere—more “celebration with a view” than quiet sightseeing.
Because this trip is bound for Cascade Canyon, it’s an ideal choice for travelers who want the D&SNG experience but don’t need the full-day Silverton itinerary. You still get the remote scenery and that unmistakable narrow-gauge ambience, just in a format that fits a single themed day.
Who is it best for?
Families looking for a holiday-themed outing that’s more memorable than a restaurant meal
Couples and friend groups who enjoy a tasting-style experience (Guinness, snacks, music, and views)
Railfans who want an excuse to ride outside peak season—often with a slightly different pace and crowd than midsummer
How to plan your day
The D&SNG’s Durango depot is located right on Main Avenue, making it easy to build a full day around the trip—breakfast downtown, train ride, then dinner and a stroll through Durango afterward.
A good rule for any one-day special event: book early if you can. Even when a railroad offers multiple car classes, themed runs tend to concentrate demand on a specific date, and the Shamrock Express is literally tied to St. Patrick’s Day. (The D&SNG also highlights “limited seating” in social posts promoting the event.)
Final Thoughts
Plenty of scenic railroads offer great views. The Durango & Silverton feels different because it’s a surviving piece of a much larger historical system—and it operates in terrain where the railroad was never just decorative. When you ride it, you’re following a route built for real purpose, maintained through changing decades, and still delivering passengers into the backcountry the way it has for generations.
And that’s what makes a themed run like the Shamrock Express work so well: the celebration sits on top of an already-authentic experience. The green décor, Guinness, and Celtic flair are fun, but the real star is still the same thing it’s always been—steel rails, mountain air, and a narrow-gauge train carrying you into Colorado’s high-country heart.
