Utah St. Patrick's Day Train Rides
Utah St. Patrick's Day Train Rides

The Heber Valley Railroad is one of the West’s most beloved heritage railroads—equal parts living history museum, scenic overlook on steel wheels, and year-round special-events machine. From families chasing that first “all aboard!” moment to railfans hunting classic motive power against a Wasatch backdrop, the railroad’s appeal is simple: big views, classic equipment, and an easy, memorable ride.
And when March rolls around, it adds an extra splash of color (green, naturally) with one of its most playful evenings of the season: the St. Paddy’s Train—a family-friendly, music-filled celebration that turns a 90-minute excursion into a rolling Irish party.
A Brief History
Long before the railroad became an attraction, the Heber Valley’s biggest problem was isolation. In the late 1800s, moving goods to market or traveling to Provo and Salt Lake City meant relying on the Provo Canyon Toll Road, a rough route that could take days and became even more punishing in winter. Local residents pushed for a railroad, and by the end of the 19th century, steel finally followed the canyon’s contours into Heber.
The Heber Valley Railroad’s line traces back to the Provo Canyon Branch built in the 1890s, reaching Heber in 1899—an arrival remembered on the railroad’s own history page as a community celebration complete with a “last spike” moment at the depot.
Today, that same right-of-way lives on as a heritage operation based in Heber City, Utah, offering passenger excursions through farmland, reservoir shoreline, and canyon scenery that feels tailor-made for slow travel.
The Route
The railroad’s excursions generally run along a scenic corridor that features the best of the region: wide-open valley views, Deer Creek Reservoir, and the edge-of-the-mountains feel as the line angles toward Provo Canyon. Tourism guides regularly point to signature sights such as Mount Timpanogos and the canyon’s river landscape as part of the draw.
Heber Valley Railroad also operates with multiple named trains and seasonal patterns. A helpful detail for visitors: the railroad notes that the longer run all the way to Vivian Park (often associated with the Provo Canyon Limited) has been temporarily suspended at times due to construction and track replacement work in that section—so it’s wise to check the calendar when you’re planning a visit.
That flexibility is part of what keeps the railroad lively. Some days are about classic scenery and a relaxing pace; other days lean into entertainment—sing-alongs, themed characters, holiday magic, and the kind of on-board energy that makes kids forget screens exist.
The Experience
Heber Valley Railroad is often described as a “something for everyone” operation because it balances scenic service with an ambitious lineup of themed specials. Its own materials emphasize that special events are a major pillar of the operation, spanning everything from seasonal festivals to pop-culture-themed trains.
Even on non-theme rides, the atmosphere tends to be interactive. The railroad has leaned into live entertainment and a light “show” element on many trips—part history, part humor, part audience participation—so the ride feels like more than simply moving from point A to point B.
This is also why the railroad works so well for visitors who aren’t railfans. You don’t need to know a builder’s plate from a brake wheel to have a great time here. You just need to show up, settle in, and let the canyon do what it does.
The St. Paddy’s Train
If you’re looking for a St. Patrick’s-season outing that’s festive without being rowdy, the St. Paddy’s Train hits a sweet spot: family-friendly, high-energy, and built around live entertainment.
What makes it different
The St. Paddy’s Train is designed as an evening celebration, with promotions describing a 90-minute round trip and a departure time commonly listed at 7:00 p.m. The vibe is less “quiet scenic ride” and more “rolling party”—but one that’s intentionally welcoming for all ages.
A recurring highlight is live Irish/folk-style music onboard, often featuring the band Leaping Lulu (frequently mentioned in event listings and local coverage).
Local reporting has also noted the event’s classic Irish touches—snacks, games, and prizes—which help keep kids engaged and give the ride a “celebration” structure from departure to return.
What you’ll do onboard
While exact programming can vary year to year, the St. Paddy’s Train typically centers on:
-
Live music (the heart of the experience), with a mix of listening and sing-along energy
-
Family-friendly games and interactive moments
-
Seasonal treats/snacks (often themed—think green and “lucky” flavors)
If you’ve done other Heber Valley evening specials, you’ll recognize the formula: take a short, scenic run, layer entertainment on top, and let the train itself provide the “wow” factor the moment the horn echoes across the valley.
Who it’s best for
-
Families who want a holiday-themed outing that doesn’t require late-night endurance
-
Couples looking for a casual date night—music, movement, and a change of scenery
-
Visitors to the Wasatch Back who want something uniquely “Utah” that still taps into a national holiday vibe
And yes—this is one of those rides where wearing green isn’t just encouraged, it’s basically part of the ticket.
Final Thoughts
Plenty of heritage railroads offer scenic rides. What sets Heber Valley apart is the combination of signature scenery with an unusually deep bench of year-round events—the kind that turn a simple excursion into a tradition families repeat annually.
The St. Paddy’s Train captures that identity perfectly: it’s not just about watching the Wasatch roll by—it’s about hearing live music in a vintage railcar, laughing through on-board games, and getting a taste of holiday spirit in one of Utah’s prettiest valleys.
