The Heber Valley Railroad is one of the West’s most beloved heritage railroads—equal parts living history museum, scenic overlook on steel wheels, and year-round special-events machine. From families chasing that first “all aboard!” moment to railfans hunting classic motive power against a Wasatch backdrop, the railroad’s appeal is simple: big views, classic equipment, and an easy, memorable ride.
And when March rolls around, it adds an extra splash of color (green, naturally) with one of its most playful evenings of the season: the St. Paddy’s Train—a family-friendly, music-filled celebration that turns a 90-minute excursion into a rolling Irish party.
A Brief History
Long before the railroad became an attraction, the Heber Valley’s biggest problem was isolation. In the late 1800s, moving goods to market or traveling to Provo and Salt Lake City meant relying on the Provo Canyon Toll Road, a rough route that could take days and became even more punishing in winter. Local residents pushed for a railroad, and by the end of the 19th century, steel finally followed the canyon’s contours into Heber.
The Heber Valley Railroad’s line traces back to the Provo Canyon Branch built in the 1890s, reaching Heber in 1899—an arrival remembered on the railroad’s own history page as a community celebration complete with a “last spike” moment at the depot.
Today, that same right-of-way lives on as a heritage operation based in Heber City, Utah, offering passenger excursions through farmland, reservoir shoreline, and canyon scenery that feels tailor-made for slow travel.
The Route
The railroad’s excursions generally run along a scenic corridor that features the best of the region: wide-open valley views, Deer Creek Reservoir, and the edge-of-the-mountains feel as the line angles toward Provo Canyon.
