Washington St. Patrick's Day Train Rides
Washington St. Patrick's Day Train Rides
Published: February 3, 2026

Tucked beside the historic depot in Chehalis, the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad & Museum (often shortened to “CCRM”) delivers something that’s increasingly rare in the Pacific Northwest: a living, breathing railroad experience where the past isn’t behind glass—it’s right outside the window as the train rolls into the Chehalis River Valley. The organization operates seasonal excursions and special-event trains, pairing a short but scenic run with a surprisingly immersive look at regional railroading, preserved equipment, and the community story that grew up around the rails.
In the broader landscape of Washington State attractions, CCRM stands out because it blends three experiences into one visit: a depot-and-museum stop, a working excursion railroad, and themed dining events that turn an evening out into an “only-here” kind of memory. The result is approachable for families and casual visitors, but still satisfying for enthusiasts who want to hear a steam whistle echo across a river valley.
The railroad they run and the scenery you’ll see
CCRM’s excursion route follows a former Milwaukee Road corridor and typically heads west from Chehalis into the upper Chehalis River Valley, where farmlands, wooded stretches, and water views set the tone for a relaxed, old-fashioned ride. The operation is often described as roughly ten miles of track used for seasonal excursions (with the ride experience varying by event and operating plan).
That relatively compact mileage is part of the charm. You’re close enough to town that the trip fits neatly into a day’s itinerary, but once you’re rolling, the valley scenery creates a genuine “out of the everyday” feeling—especially on dinner trains, when the light starts to fade and the windows frame the river landscape like a moving postcard
The Museum's Signature Locomotive
While the depot area and museum collection help anchor the experience, the railroad’s identity is closely tied to its steam power—particularly locomotive No. 15. Travel and museum write-ups commonly note that the Chehalis-Centralia operation is among the few steam-powered railroads in Washington and that the group serves as caretaker of No. 15 and other historic pieces.
For railfans, No. 15’s story is part of the appeal: it’s a classic working steam locomotive preserved not as a static artifact, but as an operating centerpiece when circumstances allow. One historical overview notes that the engine was built in 1916 by Baldwin Locomotive Works, later associated with regional industrial/short-line operations, and today is closely identified with the Chehalis-Centralia railroad.
Even if you’re not the kind of visitor who memorizes wheel arrangements, it’s hard not to feel the pull of steam: the smell of hot oil and coal/steam-era grime, the mechanical “conversation” of rods and running gear, and the unmistakable drama of a locomotive that looks—and sounds—like it belongs to another century.
Dining on the rails
Many excursion railroads offer standard coach rides, but CCRM’s dining program is a big reason it ends up on “must-do” lists. Their site emphasizes a “unique dining experience” aboard a restored vintage dining car as the train travels through the Chehalis River Valley.
A few practical details are worth knowing up front:
-
Dinner-train seating is typically at tables of four (and smaller parties may be seated with others), which creates a social, communal vibe.
-
The trains are unheated for certain early-season events, so warm layers matter—especially for March rides.
-
There’s a real “event night” cadence: arrive early, board, settle in, enjoy the ride and courses, then return to the depot with the feeling that you’ve done something more memorable than a typical dinner reservation.
Among these, the St. Patrick’s celebration has become a standout—part seasonal party, part vintage travel experience, and entirely on-theme.
St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Train
If you’re going to plan one visit around a single signature event, CCRM’s St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Train is an easy pick. The railroad promotes it as a festive, Irish-themed evening where the train departs in March and travels into the Chehalis River Valley while passengers enjoy a specially themed dinner in the dining car—encouraging everyone to “go green” and lean into the celebration.
The experience
The best way to picture the evening is as a rolling St. Patrick’s party with a heritage-rail twist:
-
A vintage dining car setting: white table tops, big windows, and the gentle rhythm of jointed rail underneath the conversation.
-
A themed meal: the dinner is marketed as St. Patrick’s/Irish-inspired, served course-by-course while you’re underway.
-
A celebratory atmosphere: the railroad’s own description highlights Irish culture with special foods, music, drinks, and lots of green.
Timing and planning for 2026
CCRM’s published planning calendar lists the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner in March with a 2026 date of March 14.
Because themed dinner trains tend to be capacity-limited (and seating is typically reserved), it’s smart to monitor ticket availability as the date approaches and book as soon as sales open.
What to wear (seriously)
CCRM notes that the trains are unheated for early-season themed events like the St. Patrick’s dinner train, so comfort comes down to layers: a warm coat, maybe gloves for the platform, and something you won’t mind wearing at the table.
If you’re dressing up in holiday attire, think “warm festive” rather than “light spring green.”Who it’s best for
- Couples who want a more interactive alternative to a standard dinner date
- Friend groups who enjoy themed nights out (especially with the built-in entertainment of a train ride)
- Rail-curious visitors who aren’t necessarily museum people, but love experiences with atmosphere
- Railfans who want to pair equipment and history with a true excursion format
In other words: you don’t have to be a “train person” to love it—but if you are, it’s a satisfying way to celebrate the holiday.
Heritage railroading works best when it feels alive—when the equipment isn’t just preserved, but used in a way that makes sense for today’s visitors. CCRM hits that balance by offering straightforward scenic rides and then elevating select dates into something bigger: a dining experience, a seasonal celebration, and a moving museum all at once. Between its steam pedigree, its river-valley route, and a themed event calendar that includes crowd favorites like St. Patrick’s Day, it’s the kind of attraction that turns first-timers into repeat riders—one holiday train at a time.
