Maryland's Valentine's Train Rides

Tucked into the mountains of Western Maryland, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR) delivers one of the East’s most “complete” heritage-rail experiences: a handsome historic station, a steady climb into Appalachian scenery, classic photo locations, and—when steam is on the point—the kind of hard-working soundtrack you feel in your chest. Operating from Cumberland to Frostburg, Maryland, the railroad combines regional history with a polished visitor experience that works equally well for families, casual travelers, and serious railfans.
While the WMSR does not offer a decidated Valentine's special, they do host their popular "Allegheny Mountain Dinner Train" on February 13-14, 2026.

WMSR’s story is inseparable from the legacy of the Western Maryland Railway, whose roots stretch back to the mid-19th century and whose identity became synonymous with mountain grades, coal traffic, and rugged engineering. WMSR’s own “Our History” overview notes the Western Maryland Railway’s long timeline (1852–1983), such as how this line was once part of its Connellsville Extension main line reaching Connellsville, Pennsylvania - and explains how excursion operations evolved in the late 1980s/early 1990s into what became today’s Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.
A huge part of the appeal is that the railroad’s journey feels “railroady” in the classic sense: you depart from a real railroad station in a real railroad town, you climb into the Alleghenies, and you arrive at a destination with its own charm and walkability.
The Route
Most trips begin at the historic Cumberland station, a Western Maryland Railway structure built in 1913, which WMSR highlights as a cornerstone of the experience and a landmark that later found new life as the home base for a heritage railroad.
Soon after leaving Cumberland, the line threads through The Narrows, a dramatic gap flanked by mountains where you can often glimpse waterways and parallel rail infrastructure—an immediate “welcome” to Western Maryland’s layered transportation history.
A few of the signature landmarks along the ride include:
- Helmstetter’s Curve – an iconic sweeping bend and favorite railfan photo location, celebrated by WMSR as a legendary scenic and photography spot.
- Brush Tunnel – built in 1911 and measuring 914 feet, it’s a highlight for riders and a reminder of the engineering needed to tame the grade.
- Mount Savage Overlook – where WMSR points out the nearby site tied to the manufacture of the first rolled iron rails in the United States (1844)—a neat “industry history” moment woven right into the scenery.
- Former Cumberland & Pennsylvania (C&P) bridges and the approach to Frostburg – the railroad notes these bridges are popular with photographers, especially when steam is assaulting the last stiff pull into town.
The trip’s western end is Frostburg, where passengers are greeted by the restored 1891 C&P station and a welcoming mountain-town atmosphere. WMSR also notes the layover opportunity—time to explore shops and restaurants on Main Street, soak up the small-town vibe, and watch the railroad do its work before the return.
Motive Power
WMSR’s public image today is closely linked with its headline steam locomotive, No. 1309, a massive articulated engine with a story that reads like a “saved-from-the-brink” documentary. WMSR’s own locomotive page explains that the engine—built in 1949 for the Chesapeake & Ohio—returned to steam after an extensive restoration and became a major tourism draw on the Cumberland–Frostburg run.
Rail media has echoed the significance of 1309 in operation. A Trains.com report on WMSR’s early 2026 excursions notes that the railroad opened its 2026 season with Cumberland–Frostburg trips powered by the former C&O 2-6-6-2 No. 1309, and it also summarizes how the WMSR route uses former Western Maryland trackage and transitions onto former C&P rails near the end of the run into Frostburg.
Even when steam isn’t leading, WMSR’s diesel fleet keeps the show moving and maintains that “real railroad” feel—especially on busy weekends and special events. And for anyone who enjoys the behind-the-scenes side of preservation, the railroad’s operation is rooted in serious maintenance capabilities and ongoing restoration work, with continued investment in keeping historic equipment running for public service.
Allegheny Mountain Dinner Train
If the Frostburg run is WMSR’s signature “mountain excursion,” the Allegheny Mountain Dinner Train is its signature evening experience—a date-night-ready outing that pairs candlelit dining-car ambience with the rhythm of the rails.
WMSR positions this train as an award-winning dinner experience offered on select Saturday evenings (January–November), with meals prepared fresh onboard. What the experience is like
The official dinner-train description is refreshingly clear about the flow:
- Boarding begins at 6:30 PM
- Departure at 7:00 PM
- Three-hour round trip, returning to Cumberland around 10:00 PM
It’s also explicitly an adults-only (21+) excursion, which helps set the tone: this isn’t a “kids-and-cocoa” holiday run—it’s a relaxed, grown-up night out.
Once onboard, WMSR describes a gourmet 3-course meal: a fresh start (typically a salad course), a choice of expertly prepared entrées, and a “signature dessert” crafted by the chef. Add full bar service (wine, cocktails, spirits) plus complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, and the result is a classic dining-car evening with a modern hospitality touch—served in what the railroad calls an intimate, romantic, candlelit setting.
Menus and seasonal variety
