Texas Beer Tasting Train Rides
Texas Beer Tasting Train Rides
Published: February 9, 2026
By: Adam Burns
East Texas has a way of slowing the clock. The highways thin out, the horizon turns green, and the Piney Woods close in with tall timber, soft light, and that particular hush you only get in the deep countryside. The Texas State Railroad taps directly into that atmosphere—pairing real, lived railroad history with a relaxed modern excursion experience between the depot towns of Palestine and Rusk. And for adults who like their scenic rides with a little extra flavor, the railroad’s “Pints In The Pines” train is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience the line: a vintage evening departure, craft beer samplings, and a catered dinner at the Rusk depot under the settling East Texas sky.
A Brief History
Unlike many tourist lines that began as common-carrier railroads serving private industry, the Texas State Railroad’s earliest story is tied to the Texas prison system’s industrial operations near Rusk. According to the Handbook of Texas Online, the route originated as an industrial railroad built to haul wood and iron ore for a state-operated smelter, with early construction beginning in the late 19th century and incremental extensions following as the operation expanded.
Over time, the rails pushed farther outward, connecting communities and creating a transportation corridor through the region. Eventually, the state shifted directions, and in the 1970s the property was turned over to public stewardship—ultimately leading to the creation of a heritage operation that could preserve the railroad experience rather than abandon it. The result is what visitors ride today: a working, excursion-focused railroad that remains one of Texas’ most distinctive state-linked rail attractions.
The Piney Woods Route today
Modern Texas State Railroad excursions run on a 25-mile line between Palestine and Rusk, typically experienced as a 50-mile round trip through the Piney Woods. The railroad itself invites visitors to settle in, enjoy the scenery, and lean into that “simpler time” feeling—something the line does naturally, thanks to its wooded right-of-way and the unhurried pace of a leisure train.
The depots are part of the charm. Palestine has long been known as a railroad town, and arriving at an active depot—ticketed, staffed, and ready for departure—adds to the sense that you’re doing something more meaningful than simply “taking a ride.” At the other end, Rusk feels like a destination built for lingering, especially on special-event evenings when the grounds host food service and entertainment.
Pints In The Pines
“Pints In The Pines” is designed as an adult-only evening excursion, built around three simple ingredients: a scenic run, curated beer tastings, and a relaxed social setting. Texas State Railroad describes it as a journey departing promptly from Palestine at 5:00 p.m., traveling to the Rusk Rail Depot through the Piney Woods while guests sample several local or regional beers along the way.
Not a beer drinker? You’re still welcome. The railroad notes that a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase onboard, so the experience doesn’t hinge entirely on tasting flights.
A highlight comes upon arrival in Rusk. Rather than turning the train immediately for the return, the event includes a catered dinner with dessert served on the depot grounds—timed to match the pleasant evening shift as the sun lowers and the air cools. And as an extra keepsake, the ticketed experience has been promoted as including a souvenir Texas State Railroad pint glass (a nice touch that turns an outing into a memento).
Onboard Experience
Beer events can sometimes feel rushed—stand in line, sip quickly, move along. “Pints In The Pines” succeeds because the train itself becomes the venue. You’re seated, comfortable, and unspooling through forested scenery while the event happens around you. It creates a “rolling front porch” effect: conversation comes easy, the views change steadily outside the window, and the tastings become a shared rhythm rather than a frantic schedule.
Expect the mood to be more casual and social than formal. This is the kind of outing that works equally well for a group of friends, a low-key date night, or out-of-town visitors who want something “very Texas” without needing cowboy boots or a honky-tonk itinerary. The Piney Woods provide a naturally cinematic backdrop—especially as the evening light warms up.
How the evening typically unfolds
While exact timing and details can vary by date, the railroad’s description gives a clear outline of the experience:
- Arrive at the Palestine depot early to park, check in, and get settled before the prompt departure.
- Depart at 5:00 p.m. and begin the run through the Piney Woods with beer sampling offered during the trip.
- Arrive in Rusk and transition to an outdoor depot-grounds dinner with dessert and non-alcoholic options like water/tea noted in event listings.
- Return toward Palestine afterward, with additional onboard purchases available depending on the evening’s service setup.
The result is an outing that feels complete: not only a ride, but a beginning, middle, and end—train travel as an experience, not just transportation.
Planning Your Visit
Texas State Railroad already delivers the fundamentals: a genuine historic corridor, classic depots, and a route through scenery that still feels rural and unspoiled. “Pints In The Pines” adds a festive, grown-up layer that doesn’t overpower the heritage feel—it complements it. You’re still riding the rails of a line with deep state history; you’re just doing it with a pint glass in hand and dinner waiting at the far end.
For visitors building a weekend around Palestine, Rusk, Tyler, or the wider Piney Woods region, it’s an easy centerpiece event: distinctive, social, scenic, and wonderfully unhurried—exactly what a train ride ought to be.
