Illinois Christmas Train Rides: A Complete Guide
Published: March 9, 2025
By: Adam Burns
With the holiday season fast approaching, there's an undeniable magic that envelops the air, transforming the world into a wonderland of sparkling lights, festive decorations, and joy-filled events.
In Illinois, one of the most enchanting ways to immerse yourself in this festive spirit is by embarking on a Christmas-themed train ride. There are a few locations across the state hosting such festivities.
These special journeys offer a unique blend of adventure, nostalgia, and holiday cheer, making them perfect experiences for families, couples, and anyone looking to immerse themselves in the wonder of Christmas. Here’s a guide to some of the best Christmas-themed train rides in Illinois.
Fox River Trolley Museum
The Fox River Trolley Museum offers the Santa's Trolley Express, an intimate and charming Christmas train ride that takes place on a historic trolley. This event is ideal for families looking for a low-key yet delightful holiday outing.
The journey consists of a scenic ride along the Fox River, with the trolley decked out in festive decorations. Santa Claus makes an appearance to meet each child, posing for photos and handing out small gifts.
This experience is less about elaborate entertainment and more about savouring a peaceful, joyful ride through a winter landscape, making it a great option for those who prefer a quiet celebration of the holidays.
Illinois Railway Museum
IRM is the nation's largest such museum and a must-see if you enjoy trains. It began as a grassroots organization started by a group of ten railroad enthusiasts who launched the Illinois Electric Railway Museum in 1953.
Their goal at that time was to preserve the dying interurban industry. To begin this endeavor they acquired former Indiana Railroad car #65 by pitching in $100 each.
Next, property was needed to showcase not only the car but also any future pieces they might acquire. At first they found a patch of ground in North Chicago but when this became too cramped moved to empty farmland in Union in 1964.
By then the group's collection had amassed 40 pieces, which now included both general railroad equipment and interurban cars. As a result, the titled was shortened to the Illinois Railway Museum.
By 1966 it had fully restored its first interurban car and showed off a rebuilt steam locomotive two years later. Wishing to host excursions it next built a 1 mile loop for its operational streetcars/interurbans, completed in 1981.
Today, IRM has expanded its track to 4.6 miles (all built from scratch, no former right-of-way was utilized) and owns a total of 80 acres. Its list of buildings and equipment is extremely impressive.
During the holiday season IRM hosts the Happy Holiday Railway during late November and December allowing kids to experience a 40-minute train ride while enjoying treats on-board and meeting St. Nick himself.
Children will enjoy the storytelling sessions and activities, while adults can appreciate the historical significance of the train and the museum's impressive collection. It's a heartwarming journey that evokes the nostalgia of Christmases past.
Tips for Enjoying Your Trip
Book Early: These train rides are incredibly popular, so it’s important to book your tickets early to ensure availability. Some events might sell out weeks in advance.
Dress Appropriately: Many festive train rides involve outdoor waiting areas or boarding, so dress in warm, comfortable clothes. If the event encourages it, wearing pajamas can add to the fun and spirit of the occasion.
Plan for Photos: With Santa Claus making appearances on most rides, make sure to have your camera or smartphone ready to capture memorable moments.
Illinois offers a few Christmas-themed train rides that provide a magical experience during the holiday season. Whether you're waving to Santa on the Happy Holiday Railway or enjoying the intimate charm of a smaller railroad, these train rides capture the essence of the holidays and provide unforgettable memories for passengers of all ages. So, hop aboard and let the tracks take you to a world of joy, laughter, and holiday spirit!
