Missouri Ice Cream Tasting Train Rides
Missouri Ice Cream Tasting Train Rides
Published: February 13, 2026

If you’ve ever driven through Jackson, Missouri, you’ve probably spotted it: classic passenger cars, a proud diesel, and the unmistakable sense that something fun is happening at the depot. The Iron Mountain Railway (also known as the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern Railway) operates as a volunteer-run heritage excursion line that leans into what families want most from a tourist railroad—history you can touch, themed experiences you’ll actually remember, and just enough surprise to keep kids (and grown-ups) smiling from boarding call to the last horn blast.
Among its warm-weather offerings, the Ice Cream Express stands out as a perfect “easy yes” outing: a short road trip, a real train ride, and a built-in treat that turns the whole afternoon into an event.
A heritage railroad with a “rolling museum” feel
Iron Mountain Railway bills itself as an entertainment short line excursion railroad based in Jackson. It’s organized as a nonprofit and run entirely by volunteers—one of those community institutions that exists because people simply love railroading and want to share it.
The railway also describes its train as a traveling history museum, featuring passenger cars dating to 1926. That’s not a decorative claim—these are vintage cars with the sounds, smells, and textures you’d expect: open windows in warm weather, the click-and-clack cadence over jointed rail (or its modern equivalent), and the feeling that you’re traveling in something built for another era.
The line itself is a compact heritage operation—often described in coverage of the railroad as running tourist trains on about six miles of former Missouri Pacific track—which is a sweet spot for family excursions: long enough to feel like a trip, short enough to keep kids engaged.
Where To Board
The railroad is easy to locate (they even say, “you can’t miss us—just look for the train”). Their posted address is 252 E. Jackson Blvd, Jackson, MO 63755, right at the Hwy 72/25 intersection area.
That roadside visibility is part of the charm: you arrive, park, and almost immediately feel the “field trip” energy—families taking photos by the equipment, kids pointing at couplers and wheels, and volunteers moving with purpose as departure time approaches.
Motive Power/Equipment
Iron Mountain’s roster and paint schemes are a big part of the experience. In recent years, railfan and preservation coverage has noted the railway’s work with E8 No. 5898, including restoration and presentation efforts that highlight classic passenger-era styling.
Local news has also reported the railway welcoming another locomotive—No. 2107, built in 1941 by General Electric—underscoring that this is a living operation that continues to grow and evolve.
Regardless of which locomotive is on the point for your ride, what matters for visitors is the vibe: a real, full-size train, vintage coaches, and a depot atmosphere that feels personal rather than corporate.
The Ice Cream Express
The Ice Cream Express is designed as a summer heat-beater: you board for a themed ride that pairs the classic train excursion with a sweet treat, plus family-friendly activities layered in so it’s more than “sit and look out the window.”
According to the event listing and announcements, the Ice Cream Express features:
- An ice-cream-themed train ride (the treat is part of the point)
- Typically scheduled as a Sunday afternoon departure in peak summer (Iron Mountain has advertised 3:00 PM departures for dates like July 6 and August 3 in prior postings)
That scavenger-hunt element is deceptively smart. It gives the trip a “mission,” which means children aren’t just passengers—they’re participants. And when you combine that with a treat, you get the magical family-outing trifecta: novelty + activity + dessert.
How long is the ride?
Iron Mountain is commonly described in regional tourism coverage as offering a two-hour excursion experience through the countryside around southeast Missouri—rolling farmland, open skies, and that calming rhythm only a train can deliver.
Even if exact runtimes vary slightly by event and operating needs, this is generally not a five-minute “carousel” ride—it’s long enough to settle in, explore the car, and let the theme programming unfold.
Tickets and what’s included
Pricing is published through the railway’s reservation information, and themed food events fall into special categories. For Pizza / Ice Cream events, the posted rate is:
What it feels like onboard
Vintage cars mean vintage ventilation. Iron Mountain notes that its main cars are not air conditioned, and that summer comfort is often handled the old-fashioned way—open windows and a breeze once you’re rolling. They also note having one air-conditioned car with limited capacity, and recommend calling ahead if A/C is a must.
For the Ice Cream Express specifically, that translates to kids moving around with scavenger-hunt sheets, parents snapping photos, and the kind of cheerful chatter you want from a summer outing.
Planning Your Visit
Plenty of attractions can sell you ice cream. Plenty can offer a short entertainment experience. The Ice Cream Express works because it combines both with something increasingly rare: a real, heritage train ride operated by people who genuinely care about the railroad and the visitors on it.
For families, it’s wholesome without being dull—an easy tradition to start, especially if you’re within driving distance of Jackson. For railfans, it’s a chance to enjoy preserved equipment doing what it was built to do: move, haul people, and make memories—one sweet summer Sunday at a time.
