The Chehalis-Centralia Railroad & Museum (CCR&M) delivers one of those rare heritage-railroad experiences that feels both authentic and intimate: vintage cars, a depot with exhibits and gifts, and a scenic right-of-way that follows the lush Chehalis River Valley through farmland, forest, and trestle crossings. Better yet, the organization has built a calendar of themed rides that turns a simple train trip into a true event—especially when food is part of the plan.

Whether you’re a dedicated railfan chasing preserved equipment or a couple looking for a memorable night out, CCR&M offers a “small railroad, big experience” vibe—one that shines brightest on its special excursions like the Valentine’s Sweetheart Dinner Train.

How The Museum Came To Be

The railroad’s roots as a heritage operation date to the mid-1980s, when local supporters organized to preserve regional rail history and operate excursion service out of Chehalis. Over time, the group developed both a museum mission and a ride program built around a scenic stretch of former Milwaukee Road trackage west of town.

Like many volunteer-driven heritage railroads, CCR&M has also faced the realities of maintaining equipment, operating safely, and managing costs. In the early 2020s, operations were disrupted due to insurance issues, but service was able to resume later under a new operating arrangement—an important “comeback chapter” that underscores how much behind-the-scenes work goes into keeping a heritage railroad alive.

The Route

CCR&M’s excursions run as there-and-back trips—no “destination town” at the end—because the journey itself is the point. Trains travel west from Chehalis into the valley, tracing the river and rolling through a landscape of agricultural land and forested countryside.

Two key route notes are helpful for visitors:

Regular scenic rides typically cover an 18-mile round trip and run about two hours, traveling to the former rail stop at Ruth (a name you’ll hear often in CCR&M’s excursion descriptions).
Dinner-train style runs also use the longer routing to Ruth and are described as a roughly two-hour round trip on the Valentine’s train page.

Operationally, it’s also worth noting that there’s no disembarking during the trip—the railroad emphasizes an onboard experience where the train handles its runaround/return movement and brings you back to Chehalis.

Motive Power

Ask longtime fans of the railroad what defines CCR&M, and many will immediately bring up steam locomotive No. 15, a Baldwin-built 2-8-2 “Mikado” dating to 1916 for the Cowlitz, Chehalis & Cascade Railway. It’s a beloved centerpiece of the museum story—but at the moment, CCR&M notes that the locomotive is undergoing specialized repairs and is not currently pulling excursions.

That “steam temporarily sidelined” status is common across the preservation world: boilers and fireboxes don’t care how charming a locomotive is—repairs happen on the locomotive’s schedule, not ours. The encouraging part is that CCR&M continues to interpret No. 15’s history and uses the restoration effort as part of its mission and fundraising story.

Even when steam isn’t on the point, the railroad still leans hard into the classic passenger-rail experience through its historic cars, themed events, and the simple joy of rolling through river-valley scenery at excursion speed.

On Board Experience

CCR&M makes it easy to tailor the ride to your style:

On regular runs, you’ll typically find both indoor and outdoor seating, with the ability to move about and sample both views while the train is in motion.
For dinner-train events, seating is oriented around tables, and CCR&M notes that parties smaller than a full table may share seating unless they purchase additional seats for privacy.

Beyond the ride itself, the depot experience matters here. CCR&M notes a gift shop and display area of memorabilia, making the stop worthwhile even if someone in your party isn’t riding that day.
