South Dakota 'Wine Tasting' Train Rides
Published: May 19, 2026
By: Adam Burns
South Dakota, with its sprawling prairies, majestic Black Hills, and rich cultural history, offers a unique backdrop for a growing wine culture unburdened by pretense.
For wine enthusiasts and adventurers alike, the state introduces a novel way to experience its local viticulture: wine tasting trains. These excursions combine the romance and nostalgia of train travel with the sensory delight of wine tasting, creating a memorable experience that captures the essence of South Dakota. There is currently one location hosting these events, the Black Hills Central Railroad in Hill City.

Wine Tasting Trains
Wine tasting trains are a distinct concept, inviting passengers to savor fine wines while taking in the scenic beauty of their surroundings. In South Dakota, this experience is enhanced by the region's natural charm, with historic steam locomotives chugging along lines that cut through verdant landscapes, rolling hills, and sometimes even past iconic landmarks.
The trips typically last a few hours, during which guests are treated to curated wine selections from local vineyards. Trained sommeliers or knowledgeable hosts provide insights into each wine, discussing flavors, aromas, and the winemaking process. This enriching experience often includes a pairing of light appetizers, enhancing the wines' complexity and showcasing their versatility.
The Wine Scene in South Dakota
While South Dakota may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about wine, its burgeoning wine industry is gaining recognition. The state is home to a number of wineries and vineyards, many of which focus on cold-climate grape varieties such as Frontenac, Marquette, and La Crescent. These varieties are uniquely suited to the region's growing conditions and produce wines with distinct profiles.
Local winemakers take pride in crafting wines that reflect the state's unique terroir. This growing industry, supported by a community of passionate vintners, provides the perfect complement to the scenic train journeys that introduce passengers to these exquisite local flavors.
Black Hills Central Railroad
The Black Hills Central Railroad, a renowned heritage railroad in South Dakota, offers an enchanting journey through history and nature. Operating between the towns of Hill City and Keystone, the railroad provides an opportunity to experience the stunning landscapes of the Black Hills, a region steeped in rich history and natural beauty.
Founded in 1957, the railroad is celebrated for being among the oldest continuously operating railroads in the United States. The scenic "1880 Train," as it's commonly known, takes passengers on a nostalgic ride along a route that dates back to the late 19th century. This historic track - a long time property of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy - was originally built to serve the booming mining industry that attracted settlers to the Black Hills during the gold rush era.
The railroad's meticulously restored steam and diesel locomotives, some of which date back to the early 1900s, are a testament to engineering marvels of a bygone era. Visitors can enjoy picturesque views of dense forests, rolling hills, and clear streams, providing a glimpse into the region's wild beauty. Wildlife sightings are common, with deer and other native animals frequently spotted along the journey.
A ride on the railroad is more than just a train trip; it is an educational experience. The knowledgeable guides on board provide captivating insights into the area’s history, the workings of the trains, and the significance of the railroads in the development of western America. This enriching narration enhances the experience, making it an educational outing for families, rail enthusiasts, and history buffs alike.
The railroad hosts a number of special events throughout the year, such as the Oktoberfest, Wild West events, and the Holiday Express for Christmas. Another popular trip is the Wine Express which features wines from the Prairieberry Winery located directly in Hill City.
Final Thoughts
Wine tasting trains are a quintessential example of how traditional experiences can be innovatively combined to create fresh, engaging adventures. By spotlighting local wines and the beautiful South Dakota landscape, these excursions not only promote the state's winemaking capabilities but also contribute to a unique leisure tourism model.
As this niche experience continues to grow in popularity, it embodies the state's spirit of exploration and passion for showcasing its rich, authentic offerings. Whether you're a wine aficionado or simply seeking a unique travel experience, wine by rail promises an unforgettable journey filled with breathtaking views, exceptional flavors, and heartfelt memories.
