Ohio 'Wine Tasting' Train Rides
Published: May 18, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Ohio, a state renowned for its lush landscapes, charming towns, and the Great Lakes, holds another gem – a burgeoning wine culture. Nestled within the heart of the Midwest, Ohio's wine country offers a delightful blend of scenic beauty, history, and viticultural splendor. Among the intriguing ways to experience this is aboard the wine tasting trains that journey through some of Ohio's most picturesque vineyards and wineries.

A Sip Of History
Ohio's winemaking roots extend back to the 19th century, earning it a distinguished place in the annals of American viniculture. The state's unique climate and rich soils contribute to the flourishing of numerous grape varietals, providing a diverse palette for wine enthusiasts to explore. In recent years, the wine tasting train experience has gained traction as a way to reconnect enthusiasts with the traditional and emerging wine scenes.
All Aboard: The Wine Tasting Train Experience
Wine tasting trains are designed not only to transport passengers across beautiful landscapes but also to immerse them in the state's vibrant wine culture. Typically, these excursions offer a blend of education, entertainment, and indulgence, making them perfect for both connoisseurs and casual wine lovers.
Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
The upscale and first-class Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is perhaps one of the most famous in Ohio. This iconic train runs through the stunning Cuyahoga Valley National Park, providing a breathtaking backdrop for wine tasting.
There are several spirit tasting trains to choose from at the CVSR including the:
- Grape Escape (Wine Tasting)
- Cocktails On Rails
- Happy Hour Train
- Ales On Rails
- Sip & Savor
The railroad states the "Grape Escape" includes sampling four different wines from rotating wineries as well as a charcuterie box featuring artisan cheeses, cured meats, and other treats.
Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad
The Lebanon Mason & Monroe Railroad (LM&M Railroad) is a heritage scenic railroad based in Lebanon, Ohio, offering a nostalgic rail experience through the Warren County countryside. Operating out of a historic downtown depot, the LM&M departs aboard vintage passenger cars pulled by a historic locomotive, inviting riders of all ages to enjoy relaxed journeys along a portion of the original Cincinnati, Lebanon and Northern Railway right-of-way.
Founded in 1985 and run by the nonprofit Cincinnati Scenic Railway, the railroad preserves an important piece of Ohio’s rail heritage while providing a mix of traditional scenic rides and themed special events throughout the year. The track used today is part of a more extensive network that once connected communities like Cincinnati, Mason and Monroe, and reflects the region’s 19th-century rail development.
A Variety of Train Experiences
At its core, the LM&M offers classic scenic rides such as the Turtle Creek Valley Flyer and the Lebanon Experience, which allow passengers to soak in rural landscapes and learn about local railroading history. Beyond these standard excursions, the railroad has expanded its offerings to include a variety of themed events tailored for families, adults, and special celebrations. These range from the popular North Pole Express holiday train to the Murder Mystery Train, trivia nights, and even seasonal animals-and-adventure rides.
The Wine and Cheese Train
Among its adult-oriented experiences, the Wine and Cheese Train stands out as a relaxed and social way to enjoy the rails. Designed for passengers 21 and over, this event transforms a scenic ride into a tasting journey. Each ticket typically includes:
-
A curated charcuterie box or Charcuterie Cup featuring a selection of artisan cheeses, fresh fruit, and savory meats.
-
Three wine tastings from Valley Vineyards, a well-regarded Ohio winery, with samples such as Riesling, Sangria, and Blackberry Wine. Each is selected to pair well with the food offerings and to enhance the overall tasting experience.
The train itself provides a scenic backdrop — gently rolling farmland and Ohio’s countryside glide past vintage railcar windows as guests sip and savor. After the formal tastings, additional glasses or bottles are typically available for purchase either directly from servers or in the train’s Queen City Tavern concession car, which carries an assortment of beverages and snacks.
This event is part of a broader trend at the LM&M to offer unique experiences that appeal to adult audiences while still celebrating the railroad’s historical charm. For example, a related Sweetest Day Wine and Cheese Train pairs select wines like Chocolate Amour and Moscato d’Asti with fruit and cheese for events tied to the seasonal occasion. The Cultural Impact of Wine Tasting Trains
Wine tasting trains do more than just offer entertainment; they contribute significantly to the cultural and economic landscape of Ohio. They promote local agriculture and small businesses, creating a unique synergy between tourism and winemaking.
They also serve as a vital platform for education, fostering a deeper appreciation of wine, regional history, and the intricacies of viticulture. These journeys highlight the interconnectedness of landscapes, local economies, and cultural heritage.
Final Thoughts
Ohio’s wine tasting trains offer a truly special way to explore the state’s countryside, blending scenic train travel with the richness of its burgeoning wine culture.
Whether you're a seasoned oenophile or just a curious traveler, these unique journeys promise an enjoyable and educational experience like no other.
As the whistle blows and the train eases out of the station, each passenger embarks not only on a physical journey through Ohio's landscapes but also a sensory one through the diverse world of its wines.
