EJ&E Railway Timetables (January, 1930)

Published: May 15, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Featured here is the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway's timetables presented in the January, 1930 edition of the "Official Guide Of The Railways." The EJ&E, a Class II belt line, was formed on December 4, 1888, through the merger of the Joliet, Aurora & Northern Railway (est. 1884) and other short lines. Chartered in 1887, its 164-mile route encircled Chicago from Waukegan, Illinois, to Gary, Indiana.

It offered vital freight bypasses around the city's congested yards, serving steel mills and connecting Class I railroads while earning the slogan “Around—Not Thru Chicago.” Owned by U.S. Steel from 1901 after expansions via smaller line acquisitions, passenger service ran from 1889 to 1909. Early dieselization began in 1937. Canadian National acquired the railroad in 2009 to streamline Chicago operations, fully merging it into its Wisconsin Central subsidiary on January 1, 2013, concluding 124 years of independent service.
