By: Adam Burns
Nestled amid the rolling hills, lush valleys, and historic towns of Pennsylvania are some truly delightful wine tasting experiences, where the journey is just as important as the destination.
Wine tasting train rides in Pennsylvania are a unique and enchanting way to explore the state’s burgeoning wine scene while enjoying a leisurely ride through picturesque landscapes. Whether you are a seasoned oenophile or a curious enthusiast, these train rides offer an immersive way to savor Pennsylvania’s delicious vintages.

A Rich Tradition of Rail and Wine
Pennsylvania’s railroads have a storied history, with their iron tracks weaving through the state’s scenic countryside and vibrant towns. Similarly, Pennsylvania’s wine industry has been growing, with diverse wineries producing everything from full-bodied reds to crisp whites.
Combining these two worlds – rail travel and viticulture – results in an experience that is both relaxing and enriching. As you ride the rails, glass in hand, you’ll discover not just the wines but the stories and histories that make each bottle unique.
The Experience
Wine tasting trains are not just about sampling different wines; it’s an experience for all the senses. Picture yourself boarding a beautifully restored vintage train car where the ambience is set with soft lighting and perhaps some live music or commentary about the journey. The gentle lurch of the train as it departs, the rhythmic clacking of the wheels, and the ever-changing vistas outside your window set a soothing pace, perfect for wine tasting.
As you settle into your plush seat, the wine tasting begins. Local experts or sommeliers guide you through a selection of wines, providing insights into their flavors, origins, and what makes them unique. Often accompanied by a selection of cheeses, charcuterie, or chocolates, each sip becomes a part of a larger story of Pennsylvania’s rich agricultural traditions.
Colebrookdale Railroad
Located in southeastern Pennsylvania, the Colebrookdale Railroad’s "Secret Valley Line" offers a stunning journey through the pristine wilderness of the Secret Valley. Their "Secret Valley Wine Tasting" train is a popular draw, treating guests to a 90-minute ride that includes tasting locally produced wines from the Ridgewood Winery, paired expertly with nuts, cheeses, meats, and crackers.
The historic railroad cars, some dating back more than a century, add to the nostalgic feel of the experience. As the train meanders through the woods and quaint villages, attendees enjoy a carefully curated selection of wines while learning about the area’s natural history and the provenance of their drinks.
Strasburg Rail Road
The Strasburg Rail Road, America’s oldest continuously operating railroad, offers a remarkable blend of historic charm and modern indulgence. Located in the heart of Amish Country, this rail line frequently partners with local wineries to host wine & cheese events.
Passengers are treated to breathtaking views of the Pennsylvania Dutch countryside as they taste a range of wines. Each ride, lasting about 45 minutes, typically features carefully selected wines from Waltz Vineyards, making every trip a unique opportunity to discover new favorites while exploring one of the most picturesque areas of the state.
New Hope Railroad
Set in the charming town of New Hope, this railroad offers themed excursions throughout the year, with their "Wine & Tapas Train" being particularly popular.
This first class experience, lasting about 90 minutes, features elegant vintage rail cars that provide a cozy yet sophisticated backdrop for wine tastings.
The railroad states the experience also includes a bruschetta flight, mini crab cakes, strawberry arugula salad, and chocolate lava cake.
Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad
The Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad is a heritage railway located in northwestern Pennsylvania that utilizes former PRR trackage. it offers scenic train rides through the picturesque Oil Creek Valley, showcasing the area's rich history in the American oil industry.
Visitors can enjoy narrated excursions that highlight historical sites and natural beauty year-round. The railroad not only preserves the legacy of the area but also supports local tourism and education through its historical significance and engaging, family-friendly experiences.
Among their many special events are Wine Tasting trains; the railroad states these trips last 3 hours, include wines from a selected local winery, light appetizers, relaxing music, a complimentary souvenir, and even a wine basket raffle.
Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern Railroad
The Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern Railroad (WK&S) is a heritage railroad located in Kempton, Pennsylvania. Established in 1963, it operates on a 3.5-mile stretch of former Reading Railroad track. Known for its scenic rides through the picturesque landscape of rural Pennsylvania, WK&S offers visitors a glimpse into the golden age of railroading.
The railroad is staffed by volunteers who are passionate about preserving and sharing the history of trains. The WK&S features a variety of steam and diesel locomotives, as well as vintage passenger cars, providing educational experiences and special themed events throughout the year.
One such event is the popular the "Ladybug Picnic Wine & Cheese Train" that features wine from King Cole Winery and cheeses from the BAD Farm. Both are located in Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
The Wines of Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania’s wine industry is incredibly diverse, with more than 300 wineries producing an array of varietals. The state’s varied climate and geography allow for the production of different styles of wine, from dry reds to sweet dessert wines. Many of these wines have gained recognition for their quality, showcasing the unique characteristics of the region’s terroir.
Overview
Wine tasting by train is more than just an excursion—it is an experience that combines the joy of travel with pleasure for the palate.
As you savor the flavors from local vineyards against a backdrop of stunning scenery, you’ll find yourself carried away on a journey you won’t soon forget.
Whether you're raising a glass to the passing landscape or to new friends made along the way, these excursions present a truly splendid way to appreciate all that Pennsylvania’s wine country has to offer.
