In the sunny state of Florida, where tourism thrives on innovation and excitement, scenic train rides offer a truly unique way to experience the Sunshine State’s vibrant landscapes and culinary offerings.

Unfortunately, there are no BBQ trains currently available in the state although the Florida Railroad Museum hosts a similar event, a campfire train for the entire family!

The Rise of BBQ Trains

The concept of combining train rides with culinary experiences is not entirely new, but the incorporation of barbecue meals into these journeys resonates deeply with Florida’s food culture. As a state with a rich history in barbecue, influenced by Southern, Caribbean, and Latin American flavors, it was only a matter of time before this beloved culinary tradition found its way onto the rails.

BBQ train rides capitalize on the timeless appeal of trains, where the gentle rhythm of the tracks provides a soothing backdrop to a journey through some of Florida’s most picturesque landscapes. These experiences are carefully curated to appeal to families, foodies, and adventure-seekers, offering a delightful escape from the everyday routine.

What To Expect

Most BBQ train rides offer a comprehensive experience that includes not just a hearty meal but also entertainment and a dose of history. As passengers board the train, they are often greeted by the aroma of smoked meats wafting through the air, setting the stage for the culinary experience to come.

The rides typically feature a variety of barbecue styles, from succulent pulled pork and brisket to tangy ribs and smoked chicken, often accompanied by traditional sides like coleslaw, cornbread, and baked beans. Local barbecue chefs often partner with train operators to ensure the meals are authentic and delicious, offering guests a true taste of Florida’s diverse barbecue scene.

Florida Experiences

While the state does not host any themed barbeque train rides, the Florida Railroad Museum does present what they describe as the "Hobo Campfire Cookout."  This excursion lasts roughly 2 1/2 hours and is geared towards the entire family, where the train travels out to the Hobo Camp for guests to sit around the campfire and listen to hobo tales while enjoying hotdogs, marshmallows, and more.

More About The Museum

The museum, located in the small town of Parrish, Florida, offers a unique educational and historical experience for visitors of all ages. Founded in 1981, the museum is dedicated to preserving Florida's rich railroad history and showcases its extensive collection of vintage locomotives, passenger cars, and cabooses. The museum's most notable feature is its operational heritage railroad, which provides visitors the chance to step back in time and experience rail travel as it was during the golden age of railroading.

A key attraction is the train excursions that run along six miles of the historic track between Parrish and Willow. These excursions offer a glimpse into the past, allowing guests to enjoy scenic views of Florida's natural landscapes while riding in beautifully restored rail cars. The museum not only focuses on train rides but also offers various special events throughout the year, such as train robberies, holiday-themed rides, and steam locomotive days, providing unique and engaging experiences.

The Florida Railroad Museum serves as both an educational platform and a preservation effort, maintaining the legacy of railroads in Florida. With its informative displays and hands-on activities, the museum offers an interactive journey into the history and technological advancements of railroad transportation.

Entertainment and Activities

BBQ trains often go beyond delicious meals and scenic views, offering a range of entertainment and activities on board. Live music is a common feature, with local bands providing a lively soundtrack of country, blues, and classic rock that complements the laid-back, festive atmosphere. For families, themed rides with activities for children, such as face painting or magic shows, ensure that even the youngest passengers are entertained.

Some train operators also use these journeys as educational opportunities, integrating talks or workshops on the art of barbecue, Florida’s history, or environmental conservation, enhancing the overall experience with informative content that enriches the journey.

In conclusion, BBQ trains offer a delightful fusion of travel and taste, perfect for those looking to explore the state’s rich landscapes and culinary traditions. Whether you’re a local resident or a visiting tourist, these journeys promise an adventure that tantalizes the senses and creates lasting memories. So why not hop on board, savor the savory delights, and enjoy the scenic beauty of Florida’s backyard? All aboard for flavor!
