Historic Blizzard Paralyzes the U.S. Northeast, Halts Rail Traffic

New York / Northeast U.S. — A powerful winter blizzard sweeping the northeastern United States on Monday, February 23, 2026, has brought transportation networks to a near standstill — with rail service among the hardest hit as snow, wind, and emergency travel bans disrupt millions in the region.
The storm, fueled by a rapidly strengthening nor’easter system comparable to a Category 2 hurricane in intensity, has dumped up to two feet of snow in major population centers and created dangerous whiteout conditions from Maryland to southern New England.
Rail Traffic Shutdowns and Transit Disruptions
Amtrak has suspended all service on its Northeast Corridor between New York City and Boston into the afternoon at minimum, canceling many of its busiest intercity trains due to hazardous conditions and heavy accumulation on tracks.
Commuter rail services, including key lines operated by the MTA’s Metro-North Railroad in Connecticut, are running on drastically reduced schedules, while some regional services — such as CTrail’s Hartford Line and Shore Line East — have been completely canceled.
Bus and local transit authorities across Connecticut and other states have suspended operations as crews battle snow-clogged streets and poor visibility.
Rail operators have cited safety concerns and extreme conditions for the stoppages, with officials urging commuters to delay travel if possible and only attempt essential trips when absolutely necessary.
Broader Transportation and Emergency Response
The blizzard’s impact is not limited to railroads:
Major airports including JFK, LaGuardia, Logan, and Newark have seen thousands of flights canceled or delayed as runways are buried and visibility drops.
Road travel bans and restrictions have been implemented across cities like New York and New Jersey to prioritize snow removal and emergency vehicles.
Over half a million residents are without power as heavy, wet snow and high winds down lines and leaves communities in the dark.
Local officials, including mayors and governors, have declared states of emergency, mobilizing sanitation workers, National Guard units, and snow‐plow fleets to clear roadways and critical transport infrastructure.
Conditions on the Ground
Blizzard warnings remain in effect across much of the Northeast, with sustained winds well over 35 mph and gusts reaching 60 mph in coastal areas — criteria that officially classify the storm as a blizzard. Snowfall rates in the heaviest bands have topped 2–3 inches per hour, contributing to rapid drifts and near-zero visibility.
Officials caution that travel conditions will remain treacherous throughout the day, and cleanup — especially for rail lines and major transit hubs — could take several days depending on snowfall rates and wind impacts.
