Tri-Rail Sets New Ridership Record in 2025 Amid Funding Concerns

MIAMI, FL — South Florida’s commuter rail service Tri-Rail has achieved a new annual ridership milestone, carrying more than 4.5 million passengers in calendar year 2025 — the highest on record for the system. This figure surpasses the previous pre-pandemic high of about 4.4 million rides set in 2019, underscoring growing demand for regional rail travel across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties.

Officials with the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) announced that the commuter railroad’s strong performance reflects sustained post-pandemic growth, with both fiscal (July 2024–June 2025) and calendar 2025 ridership exceeding 4.5 million rides.

“Our passengers are the lifeblood of this system, and we are deeply grateful for their continued support,” said SFRTA Executive Director David Dech in a recent statement. “This record-setting year proves the essential role that Tri-Rail plays in connecting communities and easing congestion across South Florida.”

Despite this achievement, the system’s future remains uncertain due to state budget cuts that have drastically reduced transportation funding. Local leaders from the three counties have urged Florida lawmakers to restore funds to avoid potential service reductions or suspension by mid-2027. Riders and commuters warn that losing Tri-Rail service would intensify congestion on congested regional highways and limit affordable travel options.

The system also is preparing for major planned service demands in 2026, including support for travel to sites hosting FIFA World Cup events in the Miami area, further highlighting its importance as a regional transit backbone.

What Is Tri-Rail?

Tri-Rail is a commuter rail system serving the South Florida metropolitan area, running primarily along the South Florida Rail Corridor between West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami.

Owner & Operator: Managed by the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) and operated under contract by Herzog Transit Services.
Route & Stations: The system covers roughly 80 miles (129 km) with 19 stations (on the main line) connecting suburban communities with major employment and activity centers, airports, and other transit networks.
Connections: Tri-Rail links to Amtrak at multiple points, provides access to Metrorail and Brightline services in Miami, and serves as a key transfer point for local bus networks.

History

Tri-Rail began service on January 9, 1989, as a temporary commuter option designed to alleviate congestion on Interstate 95 during highway construction. The “Tri” in its name refers to the three counties it serves — Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade.

Originally limited in scope, the rail line was expanded in the 1990s with extensions to Mangonia Park in the north and to Miami Airport in the south, creating today’s core service corridor.

Over its history, Tri-Rail has evolved from a temporary commuter experiment into a critical mobility tool for daily commuters, travelers, and regional residents — helping reduce highway congestion, improve accessibility to jobs and services, and support economic growth throughout South Florida.

In recent years, service enhancements such as expanded schedules, improved station amenities, and integration with other transit networks have helped fuel gradual ridership growth, culminating in the record set in 2025.

Looking Ahead

Despite its success, Tri-Rail faces ongoing financial challenges that could affect its long-term viability. With future state transportation funding under debate, transit advocates and local officials are pushing for sustainable solutions to ensure the commuter railroad continues serving millions of South Floridians in the years ahead.
