Record Commuter Rail Ridership: MBTA Sees Over 29 Million Trips in 2025

In a milestone year for regional public transit, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) reported that its Commuter Rail network handled more than 29 million individual trips during 2025 — a significant marker of continuing recovery and growth in rail travel demand following the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to data released in the MBTA and Keolis Commuter Services’ annual TRACKed year-in-review report, trains on the Commuter Rail system collectively traveled over 5 million miles in service throughout the year. Those rail journeys are estimated to have taken millions of motor-vehicle trips off local roadways and saved roughly 406 million pounds of carbon emissions, underscoring the environmental benefits of rail commuting in the Greater Boston region.

The 2025 ridership figure reflects both sustained commuter demand and broader use of rail for leisure, social, and other travel purposes. Riders reportedly spent thousands of hours listening to music, podcasts, and audiobooks while onboard — a testament to how many passengers are using time on the train as productive or enjoyable moments, not just for work commutes.

Expanded Service and New Connections

Part of this year’s growth can be tied to service expansion: the MBTA officially opened the Fall River/New Bedford Line in 2025, extending Commuter Rail access deeper into Massachusetts’ South Coast with six new stations and 37 miles of track. Early usage on these stations has approached nearly 900,000 trips, suggesting strong regional interest in expanded transit options.

This new service addition marks a key moment for the agency’s ongoing efforts to improve transit connectivity and meet shifting travel patterns that have emerged in recent years.
