Nevada "Wine Tasting" Train Rides
Published: April 13, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Nestled in the heart of the United States’ western frontier, Nevada is a state known for its diverse landscapes, vibrant cities, and hidden gems.
While it may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of wine, Nevada offers a unique and enchanting experience in the form of elegant rides aboard the Nevada Northern Railway.
These journeys combine the romance of rail travel with the delight of savoring wine, providing an experience that is both unforgettable and distinctly Nevadan.

Traveling By Train
Rail travel evokes a sense of nostalgia and romanticism, offering passengers the chance to slow down, take in the scenery, and enjoy a mode of transportation that is as much about the journey as the destination. In Nevada, the backdrop ranges from the stunning Sierra Nevada mountains to expansive desert vistas, providing a ever-changing canvas as you leisurely glide along the tracks.
Nevada Northern Railway
The Nevada Northern Railway is a historic railway located in Ely, Nevada. Established in 1905, this railway was initially constructed to support the rich copper mining industry in the region, playing a pivotal role in the economic development of eastern Nevada. The railway was built by the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company to transport copper ore from the mines in the nearby town of Ruth, Nevada, to the smelters in McGill, Nevada.
Over the years, the Nevada Northern Railway evolved from a vital industrial link to a cherished cultural and historical treasure. The decline of copper mining and processing led to the eventual cessation of its original operations, but the railway has managed to preserve its legacy through the concerted efforts of volunteers and enthusiasts.
Today, it operates as a museum and heritage railway, maintaining a rich collection of original locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, and other equipment that provide an authentic glimpse into the early 20th-century railroading era.
Visitors to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum can experience a variety of guided tours and train rides that showcase the scenic landscapes of the Great Basin and offer a unique perspective on the region's industrial history.
The railway offers several themed rides, including the popular "Polar Express" during the holiday season, which brings the beloved story to life through a magical train journey, and the "Hanted Ghost Train" for a spooky adventure.
One particular event involving wine aboard are their "Taste of Italy" trains, a special dinner train (adults only) featuring Italian fine dining and wines, including desserts.
What's remarkable about the Nevada Northern is not just its preserved rolling stock and historic infrastructure, but also the immersive experience it provides.
The museum allows visitors to step back in time by offering opportunities to ride in original passenger cars pulled by vintage steam and diesel locomotives. Additionally, the railway's enginehouse, depot, and machine shop are well-preserved, allowing patrons to appreciate the inner workings of a railway operation from a bygone era.
The railroad is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, affirming its significance as a cultural and historical landmark. It serves not only as an educational platform, teaching future generations about the importance of railroads in shaping American history but also as a vibrant community hub, hosting a variety of special events and programs throughout the year.
The railroad stands as a living monument to the golden age of railroads and the industrious spirit of the American West. Its combination of history, nostalgia, and educational value continues to draw rail enthusiasts, history buffs, and families alike, offering a unique and memorable experience for all who visit.
Wine tasting trains offer an all-encompassing sensory journey, combining the romance of the rails with the delight of discovering new flavors. They are a testament to the state’s pioneering spirit, blending tradition with innovation in a way that only Nevada can.
Whether you're a wine connoisseur or simply looking for a unique travel experience, a wine tasting train ride in Nevada promises an unforgettable adventure filled with flavor, history, and stunning vistas.
