Soo Line Timetables (August, 1952)

In the early 1950s the Soo Line was at its peak of operation, maintaining a network of 4,200 miles throughout the upper Midwest between Chicago and eastern Montana. The information presented here features the Soo Line's complete listing in the August, 1952 edition of the "Official Guide."
The Soo Line originated in 1883 when Minneapolis flour millers and businessmen—led by William D. Washburn, Charles Pillsbury, and Thomas Lowry—incorporated the Minneapolis, Sault Ste. Marie & Atlantic Railway. Tired of high Chicago routing costs, they built a shortcut to eastern markets via Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan (phonetically “Soo”). Construction started in 1884 near Turtle Lake, Wisconsin; the line reached Sault Ste. Marie in 1887 and Minneapolis in 1888.
That year, it merged with the Minneapolis & Pacific and smaller roads to form the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railway (MStP&SSM), soon nicknamed the Soo Line. Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) quickly took a controlling stake, turning the Soo into its key U.S. outlet for Midwest grain, lumber, and iron ore. Expansion pushed west into North Dakota (1891) and added the Wisconsin Central (leased 1909). Though it ran passenger trains like the Laker, freight was its core business.
On January 1, 1961, the MStP&SSM merged with the Wisconsin Central and Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic to create the official Soo Line Railroad. Under president Leonard H. Murray, it stayed lean and profitable. It later absorbed the Minneapolis, Northfield & Southern (1982) and the bankrupt Milwaukee Road (1985), strengthening Chicago–Twin Cities routes, then spun off 2,000 miles of marginal track in 1987 to Wisconsin Central Ltd.
CP gained full ownership in 1990. Today, the Soo Line exists as a CPKC subsidiary and U.S. reporting entity. Most operations run under the Canadian Pacific banner, but its red-and-white logo and Minneapolis roots remain symbols of Upper Midwest railroading. Once a bold independent shortcut, the Soo helped build the region’s grain economy and still moves freight across the northern plains. (298 words)
