The Virginia Scenic Railway has become one of the Mid-Atlantic’s highest-demand autumn day trips: multi-hour excursions from historic Staunton through the Shenandoah Valley and toward Blue Ridge / George Washington & Jefferson National Forest country. Flagship products include the Blue Ridge Flyer (eastbound) and Alleghany Special (westbound toward Goshen). October weekends and any announced steam specials sell out early.

About the Virginia Scenic Railway
Operated in connection with Buckingham Branch Railroad territory, Virginia Scenic offers table-service and dome-class experiences that feel closer to a dining excursion than a short museum loop. Both main scenic products are typically about three hours round trip from Staunton, with adult fares starting from about $69 depending on class and date.

What the Ride Is Like
This is a true half-day scenic outing: rolling valley farms, wooded ridges, and mountain approaches that peak in color earlier than the coastal plain. Dome and table cars maximize views; meal service on premium classes turns the trip into a relaxed adult-friendly experience. Pair the train with a separate day on Skyline Drive / Shenandoah National Park by car—do not try to force both into one rushed Saturday.
Peak Color Notes
Shenandoah Valley / western Virginia elevations often peak early-to-mid October, with higher ridges first. Late October can still be excellent in the valleys depending on the year.
