Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Fall Foliage Train Ride (2026): Frostburg Flyer Tips

Last revised: August 1, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Western Maryland’s Allegheny grades deliver some of the Mid-Atlantic’s best train-accessible fall color. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR) runs between Cumberland and Frostburg on former Western Maryland Railway trackage. The flagship scenic product—often called the Frostburg Flyer—is regularly ranked among the nation’s top foliage rides: mountain curves, a roughly half-day outing, and steam when scheduled.

October is peak booking season. Steam is not guaranteed on every departure—always check the specific train listing.

About the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad

WMSR is Maryland’s premier tourist railroad, climbing from the Cumberland terminal toward Frostburg through the Alleghenies. The route offers grades, curves, and mountain hardwood scenery that become a foliage showcase each autumn. High-profile steam (including restored Western Maryland–era power in recent seasons when available) draws national attention; diesel covers other dates.

What the Ride Is Like

Expect a half-day mountain excursion with a turn at Frostburg (layover length depends on the schedule). The scenery is continuous Allegheny hardwood and rock cuts rather than open farmland. When steam is assigned, the experience becomes one of the East’s signature autumn rail days; when diesel is assigned, the route and color remain excellent.

Cumberland and Frostburg both support dining and lodging for overnight foliage weekends. Multi-railroad itineraries with West Virginia’s Potomac Eagle or Cass/Mountain Rail are popular among serious leaf peepers.

Peak Color Notes

Allegheny elevations often peak mid-to-late October. Early October can still be mixed green/gold; late October is frequently the safest target for “postcard” color if your schedule allows. Higher ridges can turn earlier than the valley floor at Cumberland.

What to Expect Onboard

  • Busy boarding on peak October weekends—arrive early
  • Steam dates: expect crowds and sell-outs
  • Layers for mountain temperatures and open vestibules if allowed
  • Follow crew rules for open windows and photography

Tickets & Practical Information

  • Booking: Advance tickets essential for October and all steam dates
  • Base: Cumberland, MD (Frostburg is the outer terminal)
  • Pair with: Downtown Cumberland; Potomac Eagle (Romney, WV); Cass Scenic / Mountain Rail

Tips for the Best Experience

  • If steam is your priority, book the specific steam listing—not “any fall train”
  • Reserve lodging when you buy tickets
  • Midweek seats, when offered, are quieter
  • Pad drive times for mountain roads and leaf traffic
