No U.S. state matches Colorado’s density of high-profile scenic railroads: Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec for three-foot steam mountain classics, Royal Gorge Route for canyon dining scenery, Georgetown Loop for engineering drama, Leadville’s high-altitude diesel product, the Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog, and Cripple Creek & Victor’s mining-country loop—plus the Colorado Railroad Museum at Golden. Summer and fall book early; altitude, weather, and wildfire smoke can all reshape a day.
Rio Grande F9A #5771 climbs out of Denver with the Ski Train bound for Winter Park, winter 1984. Today’s seasonal Winter Park service is an Amtrak product; the mountain tourist railroads remain separate heritage operations. Mike Bledsoe photo. American-Rails.com collection.
Tourism and excursion destinations only. Intercity / ski-train style service: Amtrak (including Winter Park Express when scheduled).

High-altitude weather and fire restrictions matter. Confirm every booking. Compiled August 12, 2026.
Colorado’s railroad identity is inseparable from mining and mountains. After the Denver Pacific linked Denver to the Union Pacific at Cheyenne (1870), silver and gold booms drove a dense three-foot-gauge network—Denver & Rio Grande, Rio Grande Southern, Denver, South Park & Pacific, and others—plus engineering landmarks such as the Georgetown Loop, Royal Gorge Hanging Bridge, and later the Moffat Tunnel. Many tourist railroads are living fragments of that map.

America’s best-known three-foot steam scenic: Durango to Silverton through the Animas Canyon on former Rio Grande trackage. Full-length days are long; shorter or specialty products appear some seasons. Book early for summer and fall; smoke and fire restrictions can alter operations.

Joint Colorado–New Mexico heritage line over Cumbres Pass—among the longest and highest NG steam experiences in North America. Boarding at Chama (NM) or Antonito (CO) defines the product; plan lodging and border-state logistics carefully.
Book via official C&TS channels; confirm which terminus and train length you want.
Standard-gauge scenic and dining trains from Cañon City through the Royal Gorge. A different experience from NG steam: longer coaches, canyon walls, and food-service options on many dates.
Narrow-gauge engineering showpiece between Georgetown and Silver Plume with the reconstructed Devil’s Gate High Bridge. Strong family and mining-history appeal west of Denver on I-70.
High-altitude diesel scenic product from Leadville—marketed for views and “roof of the Rockies” atmosphere rather than steam. Acclimatize if coming from sea level.
Rack railway from Manitou Springs toward Pikes Peak. Operations, power, and summit access have evolved with reconstruction and weather—always use the current official calendar rather than older guidebooks.
Short mining-district loop at Cripple Creek—compact, tourist-oriented, and easy to pair with the historic town.
Always verify 2026 schedules, fares, and steam vs. diesel on each operator’s official website before you travel.
