Florida Scenic Train Rides In Parrish!
Published: January 11, 2026
By: Adam Burns
The Florida Railroad Museum (FRRM) in Parrish offers something increasingly rare in today’s rail landscape: a chance to ride historic equipment over a surviving fragment of an early-20th-century mainline, with the scenery and “click-clack” pace that make heritage railroading feel timeless. Rather than being a static collection behind ropes, FRRM is a working museum—a place where locomotives, coaches, and cabooses still do what they were built to do: move people down the rails, tell stories, and create memories along the way.
Whether you’re planning a family day trip from Tampa Bay or you’re simply looking for a railfan-friendly weekend adventure, FRRM pairs the basics (regular excursion trains) with crowd-pleasing theme events—think pumpkin patches, holiday rides, old-west train robberies, and evening experiences like a murder mystery dinner train.

From Seaboard Rails To A Preserved Right-Of-Way
The story of the Florida Railroad Museum begins with the line itself. The museum operates on a rail corridor built by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in the early 1900s, creating what the museum notes was the first rail line through Manatee County.
Over time, corporate changes reshaped the region’s railroad map. When the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line merged in 1967, the resulting system rationalized routes and downgraded secondary lines. According to FRRM’s history, the Parrish–Willow segment was ultimately abandoned in 1986—a fate shared by many lighter-density branches across the South in the late 20th century.
Rather than letting the rails disappear entirely, local preservationists helped build a new future for this remnant. The organization that became today’s Florida Railroad Museum was founded in 1981 (originally as the Florida Gulf Coast Railroad Museum) and later grew into an operating heritage railroad.
The Museum Today
In the present day, FRRM runs excursion service between Parrish and Willow, Florida, using a six-mile portion of the former Seaboard route in rural Manatee County.
The museum’s signature ride is a round trip that totals roughly 13 miles, typically lasting about 1 hour and 30 minutes, and it operates rain or shine. What’s especially fun is that the experience isn’t just “out and back.” At Willow, riders get a chance to step off the train and explore, including viewing portions of the collection and checking out exhibits and artifacts in a recreated Seaboard Air Line station.
FRRM also positions itself as a place to “ride the exhibits”—a practical mission statement for a museum whose collection lives outdoors, works for a living, and can’t be fully appreciated without seeing equipment in motion.
Popular Excursions
The Willow Express
If you’re visiting for the first time, start with the Willow Express. It’s FRRM’s core excursion: a relaxed ride through quiet Florida countryside, with enough time onboard to settle in, watch grade crossings roll by, and imagine the Seaboard era when this right-of-way was part of a larger regional network. The museum describes it as a 1.5-hour round trip from Parrish to Willow, with opportunities to disembark and explore at Willow.
Why it’s popular: it’s family-friendly, frequent, and the best “baseline” experience before you graduate to specialty events.
Train Robbery Experience
For visitors who want a little theater with their railroading, FRRM hosts themed weekends like the Train Robbery Experience. These events are exactly what they sound like: an interactive, staged “robbery” that turns a heritage ride into a live-action show—perfect for kids, multi-generational groups, and anyone who enjoys a dash of humor and roleplay with their excursion.
Why it’s popular: it blends a train ride with an event atmosphere—more “experience” than transportation—while still letting you enjoy the line and equipment.
Pumpkin Patch Express
When autumn arrives, FRRM leans into seasonal tradition with the Pumpkin Patch Express, a longer, activity-packed outing geared toward families. The museum describes it as a trip to the museum’s own pumpkin patch, with extras that can include hay rides, crafts, games, and a pumpkin for children to take home.
Why it’s popular: it’s an easy “annual tradition” ride—part train excursion, part fall festival—built for repeat visits.
North Pole Express
Many heritage railroads treat holiday service as their marquee season, and FRRM is no exception. The North Pole Express is a major highlight, built around an evening schedule and a visit with Santa at a “North Pole” stop before returning to Parrish. (The museum’s posted timetable shows a Parrish departure, arrival at the North Pole, then a return trip after guests visit Santa.)
Why it’s popular: it’s immersive, festive, and often becomes a family holiday tradition—so it’s wise to plan early when tickets are released.
Murder Mystery Dinner Train
FRRM also offers evening programming, including Murder Mystery Dinner Trains—a format that combines a rail excursion with a staged whodunit unfolding around your table. The museum lists murder mystery dinner trains among its special-event weekends.
Why it’s popular: it’s one of the most distinctive “date night” or group-night options in the region—equal parts train ride, dinner theater, and social event.
Party Caboose
Want something a little more private or celebratory? FRRM promotes options such as a Party Caboose among its ride offerings—another example of how the museum has diversified experiences beyond standard coach seating.
And throughout the year, the museum rotates special-event weekends (including historical reenactments and other themes) alongside its regular excursion schedule
Final Thoughts
What makes the Florida Railroad Museum stand out isn’t just that it preserves equipment—it’s that it preserves a railroad experience. You’re riding a surviving piece of the Seaboard’s footprint in Manatee County, passing through the kind of quiet landscape where railroads once stitched together communities and industry across the Gulf Coast.
And because FRRM is both a museum and an operating attraction, it can meet visitors where they are: a laid-back daytime ride for the casual traveler, a themed special event for families, or a more elaborate evening outing for adults. In that sense, it’s a model modern heritage railroad—one that keeps history rolling by making it fun, accessible, and very much alive.
