Texas Scenic Train Rides (2026): A Complete Guide

Texas has four places to ride, and they do not resemble one another. The Texas State Railroad between Palestine and Rusk is the long park railroad, steam on the days it assigns a steam locomotive. The Grapevine Vintage Railroad is the Dallas–Fort Worth trip, from Main Street to the Stockyards. The Austin Steam Train runs the Hill Country Flyer from Cedar Park to Burnet, a full Saturday behind a diesel. The Galveston Railroad Museum is a depot, a collection, and a short ride when one is posted, plus Polar Express in November and December.

State Rail History (Brief)

Railroads reached Texas late. The first is the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos & Colorado, chartered February 11, 1850, by a group led by Sidney Sherman, to connect Buffalo Bayou at Harrisburg with the Colorado River. Twenty-one miles were open to Stafford’s Point by August 1853. The rails sat at Alleyton, on the east bank of the Colorado, in 1860, and the Civil War stopped the work. Citizens of Columbus built the three miles across the river, and the road arrived there in November 1867. Foreclosure came on July 7, 1868. Sold again on January 24, 1870, it became the Galveston, Harrisburg & San Antonio. Collis P. Huntington took it on July 1, 1881, as the Southern Pacific’s way into Texas.

The Missouri Pacific, the Cotton Belt, the Katy, the Santa Fe, and the Texas & Pacific filled in the rest. The tourist trains sit on pieces of that map: the state railroad on the old cotton-belt branch between Palestine and Rusk, Grapevine on the Cotton Belt into Fort Worth, and the Austin Steam Train on the Southern Pacific’s line toward Burnet and Llano. Galveston’s museum is the Santa Fe station at the port the first railroad was trying to reach.

Tourist Railroads & Excursions

Texas State Railroad

The Texas State Railroad runs between the depots at Palestine and Rusk, a state park railroad through the pine woods of East Texas. The ordinary trip is most of a day, with time at the far depot. Steam is the reason many people come, and steam is not on every listing. The October 24, 2026, Spooky Special is an evening diesel trip. Read the day you want. Meal events are easy to misread: on the March Dogwood dates, a toast and an appetizer were on the train and the lunch was served on the grounds at Rusk. Those dates have already run. There is no plated dinner train on a regular calendar. Licensed Polar Express at Palestine is a holiday show and lives on the Polar page, not on the scenic ticket.

Grapevine Vintage Railroad

The city of Grapevine owns this railroad. Trains leave the Cotton Belt depot on Main Street and run to the Fort Worth Stockyards, through the suburbs and along the old cotton-belt line, in vintage cars. The scenic trip is the one to book for a look at the Stockyards. Ambassador Class includes popcorn, snacks, and sodas. It is not a dinner train. Santa’s North Pole Express is a shorter holiday ride, about 45 minutes, on its own calendar, and it is not the Polar Express. One December trip has boarded at the Stockyards. Read the depot on the ticket.

Austin Steam Train Association

Despite the name, the 2026 Hill Country Flyer is a diesel locomotive and a set of restored cars. It leaves the Cedar Park depot at 401 East Whitestone Boulevard at 9:00 a.m. on the Saturdays it runs, covers 66 miles round trip, and lays over about two hours in Burnet so you can eat on the square. The day is about six and a half hours, back in Cedar Park around 3:30 p.m. Saturday dates continue through November 2026. The Bertram Flyer is the shorter trip, about 44 miles, with a brief stop at the 1912 Bertram depot. Wine trains, teddy-bear trains, and evening theme trains are other tickets on the same route. The lounge sells snacks and drinks. There is no dining car dinner.

Galveston Railroad Museum

The museum occupies the 1932 Santa Fe depot at the island’s old passenger terminal and keeps a yard of locomotives and cars. The Harborside Express and other short rides run when the museum posts them. A stretch in March 2026 had rides every day. That is not the ordinary year. Check the week you are on the island. The licensed Polar Express runs November 13 through December 23, 2026, about an hour, and the depot show before boarding is part of the ticket. A Harvey House dinner has been a once-a-year event, not a weekly dinner train.

Museums Without a Train

The Museum of the American Railroad in Frisco holds a large national collection in the old Frisco shops north of Dallas. It is a walk-through museum. It is not one of the four rides above. Other depot museums around the state display a locomotive on a plinth. Unless the museum posts a departure, do not drive there for a ride.

Planning Tips

Steam, if the listing says steam: Texas State Railroad. Allow the drive into East Texas. Palestine and Rusk are both boarding points. Pick one.
Dallas–Fort Worth, half a day: Grapevine. Main Street is the usual depot.
Austin, a Saturday: Hill Country Flyer. Eat in Burnet. The square is small and the layover is the lunch.
Galveston: the museum any day, a train ride only if that day’s board lists one.
Holiday shows: Polar Express is Palestine and Galveston. Grapevine’s Santa train is a different license and a different ride.
