Durbin & Greenbrier Valley / Mountain Rail Fall Foliage Train Ride (2026): Dates & Tips

Published: August 3, 2026

By: Adam Burns

West Virginia’s Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad—marketed under the Mountain Rail banner—is a multi-product mountain portfolio that peaks hard in autumn. While Cass Scenic covers high-elevation geared steam, DGVR adds the New Tygart Flyer, Greenbrier Express, special fall photography trains, and limited Belington Zephyr foliage runs through Monongahela National Forest country. Fall rates kick in mid-September; early November still sees mountain color on many years.

Build a multi-day WV rail weekend: Cass + Mountain Rail + Potomac Eagle if you have the time.

A beautiful scene along the former Western Maryland Railway, now the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley, near Cheat Bridge, WV during the fall season. Scenes like are quite common during September and October in this region of the Mountain State. Loyd Lowry photo.

About Durbin & Greenbrier Valley / Mountain Rail

DGVR operates tourist excursions on former Chesapeake & Ohio, Western Maryland, and related mountain trackage in eastern West Virginia. Public products have historically included the Durbin Rocket, Cheat Mountain / Salamander-style trips, and longer New Tygart Flyer wilderness runs. Boarding towns include Elkins, Cass, Durbin, and special-event points such as Belington—always match depot to ticket.

Product Notes for Foliage Season

New Tygart Flyer (Elkins): The workhorse mountain day trip through early November—grades, tunnel, bridge, and forest color. Fall rate increase starts mid-September 2026.

Greenbrier Express: Cass-area departure along the Greenbrier River toward Durbin—pairs naturally with a Cass Scenic weekend.

Belington Zephyr (Oct 2–3, 2026): Limited fall foliage special from the Historic Golden Rule Building in Belington along the Tygart River through Elkins and into Shavers Fork / Monongahela National Forest canopies.

Fall Cass Photography Special (Oct 12, 2026): Specialty photo train on the Greenbrier line toward Durbin—for railfans, not a casual family milk run.

Peak Color Notes

West Virginia high country often peaks early-to-mid October, earlier than lowland Mid-Atlantic routes. Elevations around Cass and Cheat Mountain can turn first; river valleys hold color later. Early November Flyer dates can still be excellent or mostly past peak depending on frost and drought.

What to Expect Onboard

  • Multi-hour seated mountain trip—pace yourself
  • Cooler temperatures than valley towns—layers
  • Rural depots; limited services at some boarding points
  • Read the exact trip name: DGVR is a portfolio, not one loop

Tickets & Practical Information

  • Booking: mountainrailwv.com; 2026 tickets marketed on sale
  • Bases: Elkins, Cass, Durbin, Belington (ticket-specific)
  • Pair with: Cass Scenic fall; Potomac Eagle fall; Highland Scenic Highway drives
  • Lodging: Book rooms when you book trains—foliage weekends fill Elkins/Cass/Durbin
  • Tickets: mountainrailwv.com

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Plan a 2–3 day WV rail trip rather than one rushed train
  • Book October weekends and limited specials (Belington, photo train) immediately
  • Confirm boarding city on the confirmation email
  • Prefer midweek Flyer dates for quieter consists when available
  • Stay off active track and private property for photos
