Granite State Railway Fall Foliage Special (2026): Dates, Tickets & Tips

Published: August 3, 2026

By: Adam Burns

While the Conway Scenic and Mount Washington Cog grab White Mountains headlines, Granite State Railway (including Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad operations) markets one of New Hampshire’s most booking-friendly dedicated leaf products: the Fall Foliage Special from Meredith. The ~4-hour outing runs north over Ashland Summit and the Ashland High Trestle toward Plymouth, with a hot buffet lunch stop—lake country, river valleys, and classic Lakes Region color without a summit cog ticket fight.

The Granite State Railway offers beautiful views of New Hampshire each autumn via a 4-hour excursion. Granite State Railway photo.

About Granite State Railway

Granite State Railway operates heritage scenic products in central New Hampshire, including Lakes Region service associated with the long-running Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad brand and related Lincoln-area operations. Meredith Station (154 Main Street, Meredith, NH) is the published boarding point for the Fall Foliage Special.

The company also markets Turkey Dinner Trains, shorter lakeshore rides, and seasonal specials. For foliage search intent, the multi-hour Fall Foliage Special is the flagship product.

Select dates September 18 – October 18, 2026 for Turkey Dinner Train service (often lakeshore-oriented with Hart’s Turkey Farm partnership in past marketing). Book as a separate product if dinner is your goal.

What the Ride Is Like

This is a half-day Lakes Region outing: leave Meredith, climb toward Ashland Summit for elevated color views, cross the high trestle, and continue through rural New Hampshire to a hot buffet lunch at the Common Man Inn in Plymouth before returning. It is less “mountain cog drama” and more classic New England lake-and-valley leaf peeping with a meal built into the itinerary—ideal for adults and multi-generation groups who want a single structured outing.

Shorter one-hour lakeshore rides from Weirs Beach / Meredith-area schedules may also run in season for travelers who want water-level color without the four-hour commitment.

Peak Color Notes

Central New Hampshire / Lakes Region color often peaks late September through mid-October, aligning well with the published Fall Foliage Special window ending October 18. Higher White Mountains ridges turn earlier; lake-level maples can hang later in mild years.

What to Expect Onboard

  • ~4-hour round trip with off-train lunch stop
  • Family-friendly tourist pacing
  • Cool September/October weather—layers recommended
  • Group and motorcoach parking noted by the railroad for organized tours

Tickets & Practical Information

  • Booking: Advance online or by phone; select dates only
  • Base: Meredith Station, 154 Main Street, Meredith, NH 03253
  • Pair with: Conway Scenic; Mount Washington Cog; Lake Winnipesaukee towns; White Mountains loop drives
  • Tickets: gsscenic.com

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Book early–mid October select dates for peak odds
  • Treat the lunch stop as part of the experience—note any dietary needs when booking if the railroad allows
  • Prefer this product over summit cog fights if you want a meal-included half day
  • Combine with a second NH railroad on a multi-day trip rather than rushing both the same afternoon
  • Do not trespass for trestle or farm photos
