About the Conway Scenic Railroad

Conway Scenic is the premier White Mountains tourist railroad, operating from North Conway with two core products: the shorter Valley Train and the longer Mountaineer over Crawford Notch (that name since 2020; it is not the Notch Train). 2026 seating on most trains is Coach, Comfort Class, and Observation Dome—the railroad no longer uses First Class. Heritage diesel is the regular power; steam 7470 is out of service.

What the Ride Is Like

The Valley Train delivers accessible White Mountains color without a full half-day commitment. The Mountaineer is the must-do for first-time visitors who want trestles, steeper grades, and bigger mountain vistas. Expect narration depending on the train, and a busy tourist atmosphere in October. Pre-booked boxed lunches are sold on the Mountaineer (48 hours ahead); there is no sit-down Dinner Train.

North Conway’s village—shops, lodging, and restaurants—supports an easy overnight base for multi-train weekends (pair with Mount Washington Cog or Granite State / Winnipesaukee-area foliage specials).

Peak Color Notes

Higher elevations and the far north of New Hampshire often peak late September into the first half of October. Lower valleys and lakes can hold color into mid-to-late October. Build a flex day if color is the only goal.
