Adirondack Railroad Fall Foliage Train Ride (2026): Gateway Dates & Tips

Few eastern foliage rides cover as much wild country as the Adirondack Railroad. From the historic station in Utica, trains push north into the Adirondack Park toward Thendara / Old Forge and, on longer products, toward Tupper Lake. Autumn is peak season: dedicated Fall “Gateway” marketing, High Peaks Limited through-trips, and classic hardwood color over rivers, lakes, and remote forest that highway leaf-peepers never fully see.

Book early—weekend Gateway and longer foliage seats fill with Central New York and multi-state travelers.

About the Adirondack Railroad

The Adirondack Railroad operates tourist and excursion service on the historic corridor north from Utica into the Adirondacks (former New York Central / later Adirondack branch country toward Lake Placid). Primary public bases include Utica Station and Thendara Station (Old Forge area).

Product names and lengths change with the calendar: shorter Thendara-area turns, the multi-hour Gateway Utica–Old Forge style trip, and the long High Peaks Limited (Utica–Thendara–Tupper Lake) on select dates. Fall amplifies every product with park-wide color.

What the Ride Is Like

Fall Gateway (Utica–Old Forge/Thendara style): A half-day (or longer) round trip into classic Adirondack scenery—forests, streams, and small-town approaches. Operator notes for some Gateway products state passengers do not detrain in Old Forge on certain fall configurations—read your ticket carefully so you know whether this is a pure rail out-and-back or a layover town day.

High Peaks Limited: A full-day commitment from Utica through Thendara toward Tupper Lake and back—maximum wilderness mileage for peak color weeks when scheduled.

Shorter trains originating at Thendara suit travelers already lodging in the Old Forge area who want Adirondack color without the Utica drive.

Peak Color Notes

Adirondack Park color often peaks late September through early–mid October, with higher elevations first. By late October many ridges are past peak; valley hardwoods can still hold color. Early September trains may be mostly green.
