Colorado Polar Express Train Rides (2026): A Complete Guide

Colorado’s two licensed THE POLAR EXPRESS™ hosts sit at opposite ends of the state: narrow-gauge steam country in Durango and a pavilion-plus-steam museum show in Golden. Neither is a substitute for the full Silverton day train or a Royal Gorge sightseeing ticket. High-country nights are cold; treat these special events as a destination booking. They are quite an experience.

Licensed Hosts
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
(Durango): Polar boards the Main Avenue campus (479 Main Ave. area). Steam is the brand expectation—confirm your date. Railroad overview pricing has listed roughly $67–$101. This is a family theatrical ride in high-country winter air, not canyon sightseeing length. Main Avenue lodging sits steps from the depot, which is why this Polar sells as a destination trip.

Colorado Railroad Museum
(Golden): Guests gather in a heated pavilion for caroling, cocoa, and the story, then ride coal-fired steam to the North Pole scene. Standard seating and Premium Class (tables of four). Three evening shows typically at 5:00, 6:30, and 8:00 p.m. Sensory-friendly afternoons listed for December 7 and 14, 2026. Denver-metro families can do this without a Durango flight.
2026: Opens November 6; select evenings mid-November, then nightly through December 23. Book on coloradorailroadmuseum.org.
Licensing Wall
Georgetown Loop, Royal Gorge, Cripple Creek, and other Colorado Christmas or Santa trains are not Polar unless a Rail Events license is published. Use the Christmas hub and the Colorado scenic trains guide.
Planning Tips
- Durango and Golden are not a same-day pair. Pick one Polar.
- Altitude and night cold: Williams-style high country at Durango; still coat weather at Golden.
- Do not buy Polar expecting the full Silverton or a museum-grounds walk-through without a Polar ticket.
